GAC showcases the Barchetta concept to celebrate the opening of a new R&D center in Italy
GAC Group is a Chinese state-owned car manufacturer that aims to expand its operations outside of the country and has already reached 28 countries with its service centers. As part of its recent push, the company announced a new R&D center in Italy and also showcased a Barchetta EV roadster concept to flex some muscles.
The Barchetta concept has been designed by the new team in Italy in just two months' time and the head of the new R&D center is Stephane Janin, a former boss for concept development at Renault. It's important to note that GAC has similar R&D centers in Los Angeles and Shanghai.
The Barchetta EV concept has exceptionally low clearance and total height, along with a lightweight body thanks to the new battery design inspired by smartphones. The chassis is mainly made of aluminum, the interior is made of recycled plastic and by-wire connections are used instead of mechanical ones. This combo has reduced the weight of the car significantly.
