Huawei's "Qiankun" ADS reaches major milestone
At the time when many companies in the electric vehicle space are still figuring out how to make their cars desirable, Huawei seems to be already a million steps ahead. The Chinese technology giant announced that its advanced driving system, known as "Qiankun," has been installed in over one million vehicles. This news came from Jin Yuzhi, the head of Huawei's smart car division, during the 2025 World New Energy Vehicle Congress.
The Qiankun system is a sophisticated suite of technologies that helps with driving, parking, and safety. The latest God's Eye ADAS is part of the larger Qiankun environment. So far, cars equipped with this system have traveled over 5 billion kilometers with its assistance. That's like driving to the sun and back more than 16 times.
During this time, the system has parked cars automatically over 280 million times and is credited with preventing more than 2.71 million potential accidents. These numbers, according to the company, represent real-world instances where technology has potentially saved lives and prevented costly repairs.
Huawei has partnered with several automakers to integrate its systems. Brands like Avatr, Deepal, and Voyah are among the early adopters. This widespread use across 28 different models shows that Huawei is serious about the electric car industry - not by building its own cars but rather by providing the brains that power them. The HarmonyOS-powered cockpit, a key part of the system, has also seen impressive usage, with its voice assistant being activated 238 million times.
Jin Yuzhi also shared Huawei's vision for the future of driving, which he described in "three waves." The first wave, from 2015 to 2022, was all about electrification – replacing gasoline with cheaper, cleaner electricity. We are currently in the second wave, which runs from 2022 to 2027. This phase is focused on "intelligence," where smart algorithms make driving safer and less stressful.
The third wave, set to start in 2027, is "automation." This is where things get really interesting, with cars that can drive themselves, potentially changing how we think about transportation. To get to this automated future, Huawei has a clear plan.
Before the end of 2025, the company will release its ADS 4 system, which will introduce Level 3 (L3) autonomous driving for highways. L3 means the car can handle most driving tasks on the highway, but the driver needs to be ready to take over if needed. By 2026, Huawei expects to see many more cars with L3 capabilities on the road and will even start testing Level 4 (L4) systems in cities. L4 is a big step up, where the car can drive itself in specific areas without any human intervention.
By 2027, as more highways and city roads are mapped for its Navigation Cruise Assist function, Huawei believes L3 will become common. At the same time, L4 technology will start to be used commercially, paving the way for robotaxis and automated delivery vehicles.
