Italdesign's VW EVX is a two-door electric crossover we'll probably never drive

In the modern automotive world, and especially in the growing market for electric cars, the term "coupe crossover" has become a bit of a marketing puzzle. Carmakers often use it to describe a standard four-door SUV with a slightly more sloped roofline. It seems the definition of a coupe - a car with two doors - has been conveniently forgotten. That is, until now.

At the Munich IAA Mobility Show, Volkswagen presented a virtual concept car that challenges the norm. The Volkswagen EVX is a concept that not only calls itself a coupe crossover but actually has the two doors to back it up.

Behind this refreshing dose of honesty is Italdesign, the legendary Italian design house owned by the Volkswagen Group. Given what appears to be a completely blank canvas, the designers created an electric vehicle that shares no family resemblance with VW's current lineup of EVs, like the ID.4 or ID. Buzz.

The EVX stands on its own as a sharp, angular, and aggressive vision of future mobility. This creative freedom has resulted in a vehicle that, if it ever miraculously hit the streets, would look nothing like the familiar, softly-styled electric cars we see today.

The design of the Volkswagen EVX is a study in bold choices. The front end is dominated by a blacked-out lower grille and two large, triangular air intakes that house small LED daytime running lights. A pair of slim, sharp LED headlights stares ahead, while the hood features distinct lines and curves that give it a muscular appearance.

The concept does away with traditional mirrors in favor of sleek, camera-based units mounted on the A-pillars. The two-tone silver and black wheels sit under pronounced wheel arches, especially at the rear, giving the EVX a powerful and planted stance.

The dramatic styling continues at the back. The rear window is steeply raked, flowing into a short deck that reinforces its coupe-like silhouette. A thin, full-width LED taillight strip emphasizes the vehicle's width, sitting above a clean but aggressive blacked-out bumper.

The EVX concept is built on the Volkswagen Group's MEB+ platform, the same architecture that serves as the foundation for many of the company's current and future electric cars. In terms of size, the EVX is surprisingly compact at 166.5 inches long, 71.7 inches wide, and stands 58.7 inches tall. Inside, it's configured as a 2+2, meaning two regular seats up front and two smaller seats in the back.

Before anyone gets too excited and starts calling their local VW dealer, it's important to set expectations. The chances of the Volkswagen EVX entering production are extremely low. Concept cars like this are often created as design exercises or to gauge public reaction to new ideas, not as previews of a specific model.

Still, the EVX serves an important purpose. It shows what is possible for the future of electric cars and proves that not all EVs have to look the same. It's a head-turning reminder that even in a world of practical crossovers, there's still room for a little bit of drama.

Like the idea, car also doesn't look bad, but I totally don't like the part between the front wheel and front door.

Great design. Finally, somebody build Coupe SUV... Great for U.S.A., European and Japan customers... In my opinion, this model will sell so good... Thanks for designers and managers, who decided to build Coupe SUV...
