Lucid's new $50K EV promises Level 4 autonomy
Lucid Motors is finally planning a vehicle for people who don't have a six-figure car budget. The American EV maker is developing a new midsize crossover, currently known only as "Project Midsize." But Lucid isn't just building a cheaper car; it's partnering with tech giant NVIDIA to stuff it with some of the most advanced self-driving technology on the market.
Today Lucid announced a landmark initiative with @nvidia to accelerate the path to autonomous features for Lucid vehicles.

The new vehicle targets a starting price of under $50,000, a massive drop from the lofty prices of its Air sedan and Gravity SUV. To hit this target, Lucid is leaning on its new partner. NVIDIA will provide its Industrial AI platform to help Lucid build these new electric cars more efficiently. This technology promises to improve quality control and, most importantly, lower manufacturing costs. This behind-the-scenes work is critical if Lucid hopes to turn a profit on a more affordable EV.
The headline feature, however, is the brain. Lucid plans to use the NVIDIA DRIVE AV platform to deliver one of the first privately owned vehicles with Level 4 autonomous driving. L4 means "eyes-off, hands-off" driving in certain conditions. While many companies promise self-driving, Lucid is backing it up with a full sensor suite of cameras, radar, and high-tech LiDAR. The system itself will run on two powerful NVIDIA Drive AGX Thor chips.
Lucid announced that its NVIDIA partnership will also bring new automated-driving features to the large Gravity SUV through simple over-the-air software updates. This is good news for customers who have already invested in the brand. The Gravity currently features Lucid's in-house "DreamDrive Pro" system, which is already a capable Level 2 semi-autonomous assistant.
First teaser images of the new SUV reveal a sporty, compact shape. It's noticeably smaller than the big Gravity, with a roofline that slopes sharply into an upright rear end. This look is popular among electric crossovers, sharing a similar profile with the Model Y, Polestar 4, and others. It seems sleek, modern, and exactly what buyers in this segment expect.
We can also see slim, horizontal LED taillights - likely a more cost-effective choice than the complex light bars on its pricier siblings - and new flush door handles. Many speculate the final production model will be named the "Lucid Earth," a name the company has already trademarked.
"Project Midsize," or the Lucid Earth, will be built on a new mid-size platform that will host other models in the future. Production is set to begin before the end of 2026 at Lucid's new AMP-2 factory in Saudi Arabia, but when the new SUV finally arrives, it will face a brutal fight.
The sub-$50,000 EV space is packed. The smallest Lucid will compete with the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and the upcoming Rivian R2, which targets an even lower $45,000 price. Lucid is clearly betting that its reputation for battery efficiency, powerful motors, and the promise of Level 4 autonomy will be enough to attract new customers. Let's hope it's right.

Average of 10k cars per year, 3 billion dollars+ loss per year, and just 7000 people employed. Level 4 autonomy software licensed from Nvidia will save the company guys, don't worry. :)
