MediaTek drives into automotive industry with Dimensity Auto

The boundaries between electronic giants and the automotive world are getting blurred more and more with every passing day. We have Apple with CarPlay, and we have Alphabet with Android Automotive and Android Auto. Nvidia offers some of the best ADAS chips, Huge number of electric cars run on Snapdragon chips. Xiaomi is working hard on its first electric car and Geely now owns Meizu. MediaTek decided it won't be left out of this party and announced Dimensity Auto.

Dimensity Auto is an automotive platform for smart vehicles that builds on MediaTek's expertise in power-efficient chips with great SoC integration and performance. The company pulled years of experience in cross-platform technology to create this neat all-in-one solution.

The Dimensity Auto solution is divided into several main components. Dimensity Auto Cockpit is responsible for infotainment and according to the company it is designed to be the world’s fastest smart cockpit. It uses high-performance AI multi-processors both for deep learning and vision processing. The SoC is built on the 3nm process and promises high efficiency and low power consumption. MediaTek pulled all the stops here and the Auto Cockpit supports multiple HDR 8k screens with 120 Hz refresh rate as well as offering a full suite of streaming and decoding.

Dimensity Auto Connect, on the other hand, is responsible for keeping the connections on. It comes with 5G NTN tech and 5G RedCap for vastly improved performance on the move. Carrier aggregation is supported which results in multi-gigabit data speeds and uninterrupted coverage. Wi-Fi 7 is built in as well together with the support for multiple Bluetooth connections and of course GNSS support for precise geolocation.

Dimensity Auto Drive forms a base for autonomous driving and uses MediaTek’s APU. It offers a comprehensive and scalable platform for ADAS. Together with the support for integrated display technology, the company claims this new solution is the perfect backbone for flexible OLED displays, large screens, and multi-display options.

Finally, we have the Dimensity Auto Components which is MediaTek’s way to assure its automotive partners of uninterrupted supplies of up-to-date components and the latest technology. MediaTek is offering a one-stop shop for automotive companies and in all honesty, it is in a unique position to deliver high-quality products at fairly competitive prices.

MediaTek is just the latest tech company to join the automotive world. Although it doesn’t have the ambition to manufacture cars any time soon, its technology and its products will proliferate quickly. The company’s progress from budget-friendly mobile phones to a global tech giant and automotive supplier of the latest ADAS systems in a relatively short time is staggering. Cars truly are becoming devices on wheels, the question is - who’s next? We’ll we ever see Nokia offering in-car systems? Or is it going to be Microsoft and ChatGPT?
