Mercedes-Benz introduces turquoise lights to identify autonomous mode

Mercedes-Benz has received certification for turquoise lights on its EQS model. The company hopes those will become the new industry standard for vehicles operated in autonomous mode.

In California and Nevada, Mercedes has secured the first-ever approval to use exterior marker lights, signaling the activation of its Drive Pilot system. Turquoise lights at the front and rear lights and exterior mirrors, serve as a visual cue that the vehicle is in autonomous mode.

Mercedes says it selected the color for its visibility and distinctiveness from existing vehicle lighting, traffic signals, and emergency lighting. It hopes to improve safety and ensure that both the public and law enforcement are aware when automated driving is engaged.

This innovation comes as part of Mercedes' Drive Pilot system, a Level 3 autonomous drive system certified for operation in the US. However, operating under Level 3 conditional automation, it functions in specific scenarios like heavy traffic conditions under 40 mph, with a lead car available, and in well-mapped areas. The driver must be ready to take control when prompted, emphasizing the need for responsible and attentive driving even in autonomous mode.
