MG teases a sleek new electric sedan and Porsche fans won’t like it

SAIC MG is cooking something spicy - the company has released a sneak peek of what looks like its upcoming all-electric sedan. The new car is a sporty fastback with a somewhat familiar silhouette, keeping the athletic style that MG fans seem to like. A small bump on the roof suggests the car has LiDAR technology, meaning the vehicle will likely have very smart driving tools.

On the sides, the car has door handles that sit almost flush; there is also a small badge on the side that says "07." Because of this tiny giveaway, many car experts think this is the all-electric version of the MG7.

MG released a gasoline version of the MG7 earlier this month. That car is a mid-size coupe that costs between RMB 137,900 and RMB 178,900 - that's about £13,800 to £18,000. The new electric version will likely cost a bit more; it will most likely sell for between RMB 150,000 and RMB 200,000. That is roughly £15,100 to £20,100.

The MG brand has big goals for the future. Starting this year, it plans to release 13 new electric cars and hybrids over three years. These will include both sedans and SUVs. The prices for these upcoming models will range from RMB 80,000 (£8,000) to RMB 300,000 (£30,100). Clearly, MG wants to offer electric cars for many different types of buyers.

MG had a very successful year in 2025. In China, the company sold 137,000 cars. This was a 59% jump from the year before. But the company is even more popular outside of China. In 2025, MG sold 591,000 cars in overseas markets. More than half of those sales came from Europe and the United Kingdom. For 11 years in a row, MG has been the top Chinese car brand in Europe. In the first half of 2025, MG actually sold more cars in Europe than Tesla did.

The design of the new electric MG7 is getting a lot of attention, and not all for good reasons. Some Chinese electric cars have been criticized for looking too much like the Porsche Taycan. This happened first with the Xiaomi SU7 and now with the new SAIC Z7. Many people online were hoping that MG would create its own unique look, but the teaser images point to rather obvious similarities to Porsche.

The new electric sedan will go up against the Xiaomi SU7 and the SAIC Z7 when it eventually launches. Both of those cars use high-tech gadgets to attract buyers, but MG might have an advantage because of its lower price and global reputation.
