New electric Opel Corsa GSE outruns the hot hatch competition

For a while now, many people thought electric cars were only for saving money on gas or helping the planet. Many EVs seemed a bit boring to drive, but Opel is trying to change that mindset. The company revealed the new Corsa GSE. This small car is what car fans call a "hot hatch" - it is relatively light, and very quick and it proves that you do not need a loud engine to have a lot of fun on the road.

The Corsa GSE is special because it is faster than almost every other small electric car you can buy. It uses a single electric motor that produces 276 horsepower (207 kW). If you put the car in Sport mode, it can go from zero to 62 mph in 5.5 seconds. That is very fast for a car this size. Most other EVs in this category take longer to reach that speed. For example, the Alpine A290 takes 6.4 seconds, and the electric Mini Cooper JCW takes 5.9 seconds.

Opel belongs to Stellantis, which means they share parts with other brands like Peugeot. The Corsa GSE uses the same motor and battery as the Peugeot e-208 GTI, and yet Opel's engineers found a way to make their car faster. The Peugeot takes 5.7 seconds to hit 100 km/h, the Opel does it in 5.5 seconds. It is even faster than its bigger brother, the Mokka GSE. The Mokka GSE weighs 3,417 lb, which is 104 lb more than the Corsa. It seems that extra weight makes it a tiny bit slower.

Driving fast is not just about the motor. You also need to be able to turn and stop. Opel added a limited-slip differential to the front wheels to help the car get better grip when you turn corners. The car also sits lower to the ground on stiffer springs, helping it feel more stable. To stop all that power, the GSE has big performance brakes with four-pot calipers. Opel says the steering and the pedals feel much better than those on the standard Corsa electric cars.

The look of the car is also quite cool. It has 18-inch alloy wheels with a three-spoke design. These wheels are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires sized 215/40 R18. If you look at the wheels, they might remind you of the 1980s. That is because Opel wanted to honor the original Corsa GSE from forty years ago. Back then, gas-powered hot hatches were the kings of the road.

On the outside, the car stands out with a black roof and a rear spoiler. The bumpers look more aggressive than the ones on a normal Corsa. Inside, the 1980s theme continues. The bucket seats have plaid patterns on them, just like old sports cars used to have. The interior also features Alcantara. There are bright yellow accents everywhere, and aluminum pedals under your feet, and a digital screen shows how much "G-force" you feel when you turn or accelerate.

Like many other small EVs from this group, the Corsa GSE has a 51 kWh battery. We do not have the exact official range yet, but we can guess it will likely travel about 217 miles on a single charge. This is similar to the distance its Peugeot cousin travels. While it is plenty for driving around a city or going to work, it might not be the best choice for very long road trips. You will need to stop and charge more often than in a bigger electric car.

Volkswagen is also working on a rival ID. Polo GTI. That car will have a longer range of about 260 miles, but VW will only have 223 horsepower (166 kW). This means the Opel Corsa GSE will still be the champion. It seems Opel wanted to focus on speed and fun rather than just how far the car can go. For people who love driving, that is a trade-off they might be happy to make.

The Corsa GSE takes the old idea of a fun hatchback and updates it for the modern world. It is fast, it looks great, and it has enough technology to keep anyone happy. As more companies build small electric performance cars, the competition will get even tougher. For now, Opel has set a very high bar for everyone else to follow.
