Have electric cars gone power crazy?

13 August 2022
Is 1,000 hp family sedan too much? Or is it too little? How much power do we need for everyday driving?

A curious thing that many people are no t aware is that the first car that broke the 100 kph limit in 1901 was a belgian EV named "la Jamais Contente" that reach 101 kph.The batteries were of the lead type so you can imagine the weght! (over 6 tons)

No! EV power is intoxicating and it's very economical. Tesla new model 3 performance is under $60l but can go head to head with $300k or more exotics.

Anonymous, 26 May 2023"One thing electric cars achieved is the democratization of torque, power and performance... moreHaving more power(torque) means safer overtaking and handling in traffic. I never had a car like my i3 that I felt so confident in when moving in traffic. The lack of gearbox together with plentiful of torque means I can precisely position my car like no ICE car ever did for me.

Most powerful EVs have "eco mode" or similar that will cut power to half or a third, to make it easier to drive in everyday traffic. Having the BIG POWER ready when you need it won't hurt you. Using only half of maximum power in everyday traffic will help preserve power.

In my i3 it seems the "normal mode" (comfort) is like sport mode in other cars so i3 owners need to turn on "Eco Pro" for a slower car. When cruising on the highway or going slow in residential areas with narrow streets, Eco Pro makes the car less "nervous" because engine gives only like half of power/torque.

I see no problem in having a powerful engine that rarely is used at full output.

  • CAFE penalizes ICE

Fuel economy regulations result in limited production of performance ICE vehicles resulting in price gouging on powerful ICE vehicles. Enlightened business strategists have realized that EV performance is far less constrained by CAFE penalties. The otherwise true unregulated incremental cost for EV or ICE performance is dramatically less. CAFE constrains the supply of ICE performance vehicles. These performance EV's are perfect for unfulfilled demand for affordable performance.

But this March was on vaccation in Tanzania and Zanzibar.
Tanzania roads were close to a forest roads made by animals.
And 90% roads in zanzibar were nothing just a dirt and mud.
Only like said 10% was a very bad looking clone of a real road.

Fellow countryman, 22 Oct 2023300euro rent in Bratislava? That's from how many years ago, or are you a student renting ... moreWell i should pay 227 for a flat i own and live here. But i pay 250 so every summer they give me back like 500 euros.
But yes i understand you. My friend lives in city centre in a 1 and half room flat very close to the Bratislava castle at Zamocka street and pays 700 just for rent excluding electricity, gas, water and heating.

You can find roads in a bad shape here in Slovakia, true, but It's not like every road is in a bad shape.
You basically choose the worst ones, which are connecting some remote villages etc.

"One thing electric cars achieved is the democratization of torque, power and performance. Never before in automotive history have medium income people had access to this kind of performance."

When did medium income people ask for this kind of performance? Normal family cars never were supposed to accelerate from 0 km/h to 100km/h in 3 seconds. High performance is something for sports cars, not for everyday life cars. EV manufacturers should better focus on range rather than on performance. I want to drive to work, I want to make a trip with my family, I don't want to participate in racing events.

What a facetious article. There are many electric vehicles which cannot perform like the mentioned electric vehicles. The writer of this article chose super cars and is somehow surprised they are great performers. Well, article writer, my BMW i3 cannot do 0-60. My Nissan Leaf cannot do 0-60. They're electric cars. Instant torque is not enough to assume electric cars are powerful. If you truly believe this, then you must also believe standard trucks like the Ford F150 are too powerful for the road. The real question here is: why do governments allow supercar electric vehicles to be streetlegal?

It seems our countries were together for a long time, and after they split, our politics were able to "improve" things to pretty much the same level.

Fearghast, 15 Aug 2022And then there's Germany :-D Yeah, does not make sense to me either, but oh well it'... moreMan me too. If you ever was in Slovakia tiny country high taxes very expensive rent compared to tiny small salary and expensive everything else you will realize that roads like we have you wont find much else.
I mean or better to say i with to say: Even Ukrainian roads after russian battles looks much more better and comfortable and suitable.
I bet my salary if ever russian tank comes to slovakia they will litterary die on first hole on the road they step.
