BYD Yuan Up gets new version with extra range, great price

Max McDee, 18 July 2024

Chinese automaker BYD has just released a new variant of its compact electric SUV, the Yuan Up. The all-new Vitality Edition model starts at the attractive RMB 99,800 ($13,750) and promises an impressive 249 miles range on a single charge. That's a substantial range increase over the base model's 187 miles, and it comes at a modest RMB 3,000 ($415) premium, which makes it arguably the best value in the lineup.

The Yuan Up Vitality Edition joins the existing three trim levels. Its dimensions remain unchanged, with a length of 169.69 inches, a width of 72.05 inches, a height of 66.14 inches, and a wheelbase of 103.15 inches. Its fairly compact size, coupled with the electric powertrain, makes the Yuan Up an ideal urban runabout.

The new variant continues features LED headlights, a full-width LED taillight bar, and semi-hidden door handles. BYD offers four vibrant exterior colors: Relaxed Green, White, Cool Gray, and Courageous Pink, making the Yuan Up stand out in the urban jungle.

Inside, the Yuan Up Vitality Edition offers an 8.8-inch LCD instrument panel, 10.1-inch central control touchscreen, and a head-up display. Wireless charging and a crystal gear shift knob are part of the standard equipment as well. So are Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, four-speaker audio system, intelligent voice interaction, digital car keys, and over-the-air updates.

The Vitality Edition's has a single 70 kW (94 hp) electric motor generating 133 lb-ft of torque. The 45.12 kWh Blade battery pack, using BYD's innovative Cell to Body (CTB) technology, provides the headline-grabbing 249 miles range. While not the quickest EV on the block, with a 0-62 mph time of 12.9 seconds, the Yuan Up shapes up as an amazing offer for city dwellers. Fast charging capability allows for a 30% to 80% charge in about 30 minutes.

With over 49,000 Yuan Up models already sold in the first half of 2024, BYD has its foot firmly in the compact electric SUV segment. The Vitality Edition only improves on the Yuan Up's appeal and we only wish it was available outside of China.
