Audi A6 e-tron is here and is arguably the best EV by the company yet

Audi has unveiled the A6 e-tron, demonstrating that its most recognizable model can remain relevant in the electric vehicle era. Available as a Sportback (hatchback) or Avant (estate), the A6 e-tron uses the same platform as the Q6 e-tron SUV, but offers an even more impressive range and performance.

There are three powertrain options for the A6 e-tron. The base e-tron, both the Sportback and Avant, will offer a single electric motor of unconfirmed output, but likely over 300 hp if the Q6 is an indication. The Performance model ups the output to 362 hp (270 kW) by adding another electric motor, achieving 0-62 mph in 5.4 seconds for the Sportback.


The top-tier S6 model takes the performance even more seriously and boasts 496 hp (370 kW), claiming the 0-62 mph time of 3.9 seconds.

Range is where the A6 e-tron puts all of its stablemates to shame, packing a 94.9kWh driver-accessible battery capacity (100 kWh in total). The S6 Avant and Sportback Performance versions offer 398 miles and 416 miles respectively, while the base models goes to an astounding 447 miles and 466 miles of range. These figures easily outclass competitors like the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE.

The A6 e-tron's charging capabilities are impressive as well. With a 270kW maximum charging rate, it surpasses the BMW i5 (205kW) and Mercedes EQE (170kW), enabling a 10-80% charge in just 21 minutes at a sufficiently powerful DC charger. Standard home charging is available at 11kW, with a 22kW option coming at a later point.


Inside the A6 e-tron features an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster that seamlessly merges with the 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen. A third 10.9-inch screen positioned for the front passenger lets them control a number of features without distracting the driver. The lack of physical controls for the main touchscreen could be a drawback for some, though.

The cabin boasts dramatic ambient lighting and high-quality materials, the company claims, although the hard plastic ledge for resting your hand while using the touchscreen is a minor disappointment.


Both A6 e-tron models offer a generous 17.7 ft³ trunk capacity, surpassing the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE again and the Avant obviously has even more space above the trunk cover. It has to be noted though that the BMW i5 Touring boasts an even larger 20.1 ft³ cargo capacity. The A6 e-tron has it beat with its 0.95 ft³ frunk, though.


Both A6 e-tron models will be available for order starting this coming September. The first out of the gate will be Performance and S6 versions, with the standard single-motor e-tron joining the ranks a little later. The A6 e-tron Sportback Performance starts at $83,900, and the S6 Sportback e-tron demands $110,400. The Avant comes at a slight premium, with the Performance version starting at $85,720, and the S6 asking for $112,240.

With its impressive range, rapid charging capabilities, and striking design, the Audi A6 e-tron offers a compelling luxury option with cutting-edge EV technology. Hopefully we won't have to wait long to see if it delivers on those promises in the real world.

Both Porche and Audi are owned by VW. Do you expect to develop new platform for every model? VW has about 10 brands with 5-10 models per brand that makes 50-100 car models and overall 6 build platforms.

The Avant is just objectively the better looking of the two. The sedan has a very wide C pillar and rear fender area, making it look disproportionate.

Built on new PPE platform made by Porsche ... TBH, it's good they are coping Porsche (again) and not even trying to develop own platform. Audi would hardly do a better job themselves.
