Electric Mercedes G-Wagon launches in UK at nearly $240,000

The much-anticipated electric version of the legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon has finally arrived in the UK. However, with a starting price of £180,860 (that's nearly $237,500 at current exchange rates) this electrified icon comes with a hefty price tag that might leave some G-Wagon enthusiasts questioning their budget.

Three years in the making, the electric G-Class, officially known as the "G580 with EQ Technology", made its debut as a concept at the Munich Motor Show in 2021. After generating a lot of interest on the global stage and after the official debut earlier in April this year, it's finally ready to hit UK roads.

The Edition One trim, the sole configuration available at launch, boasts impressive performance specs. With 579 horsepower and 859 lb-ft of torque, the G580 delivers the power and capability expected of a G-Wagon. A 116 kWh battery pack provides a WLTP-estimated range of 292 miles, ensuring ample driving distance for most journeys.

While not exactly lightweight at over 6,800 lb, the electric G-Wagon manages to undercut the Rivian R1S and GMC Hummer EV in terms of weight. This achievement is particularly impressive given the G-Wagon's reputation for its robust, boxy construction.

The G580's price point positions it above the entry-level G450 diesel and gas-powered G500 models. Interestingly enough, it remains slightly less expensive than the performance-oriented AMG G63. This pricing strategy shows Mercedes' intent to position the electric G-Class as a premium offering within its lineup, leaving enough room for the more expensive Carbon, Manufaktur, and Magno editions.

Mercedes also used this launch to announce updates to its EQE sedan and EQE SUV models. The EQE 350+ and 500 4MATIC powertrains now feature a larger 96 kWh battery, significantly extending their range. The EQE 350+ sedan now offers an impressive 429-mile range, while the EQE 350+ SUV achieves a 376-mile range. Both models are available for order in the UK, with prices starting from £69,105 and £74,495 ($69,100 and $98,300), respectively.

With its high price tag, the G580 might face an uphill battle in attracting a broad customer base. The electric G-Wagon will have to compete with the upcoming Range Rover Electric, which has already attracted substantial interest with over 42,000 reservations. In response, reports suggest that Mercedes is planning a smaller, more affordable electric G-Class priced around $140,000. This model, if it comes to fruition, could significantly broaden the appeal of the electric G-Wagon, making it accessible to a wider range of buyers.

Doubt they will run out of money for G-wagons, until places like Russia, UAE, KSA and Some of the USA buy them to show off

My theory for why they decided to make this car is because they’re trying to see if America’s “light truck” culture that allows them to circumvent regulations and reduce quality while raising prices will also apply in other markets like the UK.

TBH, I am quite curious when will Mercedes run out of budget on vehicles that sell in extreme low volumes, are incredibly expensive to R&D or are compromise that will every buyer hate in a week. This is probably one of the last models that got ...
