Volvo teases new EX60 electric SUV and "game-changing" tech strategy

Volvo has confirmed that a new mid-size electric SUV, called the EX60, will hit the market in 2026. This exciting announcement comes as part of Volvo's ambitious plan to launch five new electric vehicles in the coming years, despite the company slowing down its ambitious electrification plans.

The EX60 will be the first vehicle built on Volvo's next-generation SPA3 platform, a technology-focused foundation that will enable the company to develop and manufacture electric cars of all sizes more efficiently. This platform is a key component of Volvo's new tech strategy, which aims to create cars that improve over time through software updates and advancements.

While Volvo scaled down its goal of achieving 100% EV sales by 2030, the company remains steadfast in its belief that electric cars are the future of the automotive industry. The EX60 joins a growing lineup of Volvo EVs, including the XC40, C40, EX30, EM90, and the three-row EX90.

At its Capital Markets Day in Sweden, Volvo unveiled its "game-changing" tech strategy, a significant shift towards developing cars that evolve and get better with age. The centerpiece of this strategy is the Volvo Cars Superset tech stack, a comprehensive software and technology base that will underpin all future Volvo electric cars. This modular approach allows for seamless integration and sharing of functionalities across various models, streamlining development and enhancing the user experience.

The EX60, along with the upcoming ES90 electric sedan, will benefit directly from the lessons learned and advancements made with the EX90, Volvo's flagship electric SUV. The ES90, expected to be unveiled in March 2025, will be built on Volvo's current SPA2 platform.

Despite adjusting its electrification timeline, Volvo CEO Jim Rowan reiterated the company's unwavering belief in an electric future. With the EX30 already proving to be a success in Europe and the first EX90 models rolling off the production line, Volvo is finally delivering compelling electric vehicles across different segments.

Volvo's strategic focus on software and technology aligns with a broader trend in the automotive industry, where companies like Tesla, and Rivian are prioritizing software-driven innovation to shape the future of the auto industry. While Volvo, like other legacy automakers, has revised its near-term EV sales targets, it remains committed to offering a range of electrified vehicles, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids.
