Acura Electric Vision - glimpse of the future NSX

Max McDee, 18 August 2023

Acura certainly knows how to make an entrance. While everyone had their eyes on the all-new and all-electric Acura ZDX at the Monterey Car Week, Acura pulled the rug from under our feet with its Electric Vision Design Study. Squint your eyes hard enough, and you just might mistake it for a spaceship.

Supercar enthusiasts might remember the hybrid NSX that Acura (and Honda of course) discontinued almost a year back. The Electric Vision, with its jaw-dropping looks, seems poised to take the baton from there. Although its name sounds like a rejected Marvel superhero, this car isn’t kidding around.

Crafted in the heart of Los Angeles, Acura Design Studio seems to have poured everything into this design study. With neon green lights that seem more at home in a rave, the Electric Vision is truly something else. The car boasts a mid-motor profile, a wraparound windshield that wouldn’t be out of place on a fighter jet, and enough sharp angles at the back to make a geometry teacher happy. Oh, and did we mention the full-width light bar? What about traditional headlights? Maybe they're there, playing hide and seek. And those rearview mirrors? They've taken a sabbatical, replaced by camera-based tech.

The Acura NSX, throughout its iterations, has morphed from an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) model in its first, now sought-after classic, generation, to a hybrid in the second, and now potentially all-electric in the third. Dave Marek, Acura's executive creative director, commented, "Our Acura design team in Los Angeles is dreaming up the future of Acura Precision Crafted Performance in the EV era." Well, Mr. Marek, if the Electric Vision is anything to go by, we're all ears. Or should we say, all eyes?

Acura's been pretty tight-lipped about the Design Study's performance specs. How many motors does it pack? Can it time travel? We're left guessing. But knowing Acura and Honda, if this makes it to the production line, it might just give a certain 'Roadster' a run for its money in the speed department. Place your bets on which one makes it first to the market at your own peril.

Remember when John Ikeda, Acura's VP and brand officer, hinted at a third-generation, fully electric NSX waiting in the wings last year? The vehicle shown at the time, fully covered by fancy draping fabric for added drama, did bear a loose resemblance to the new Acura Electric Vision.

While the Electric Vision might be just a design study for now, it showcases Acura's ambition and the direction the design team is heading in. Electric is the future, and Acura seems more than ready to embrace it, one neon light at a time.
