Porsche is already testing the electric Cayenne Coupe in the US
Porsche is getting closer to launching an all-electric version of its popular Cayenne full-size SUV. The new electric version was recently seen in the United States as it was undergoing testing. Following the release of the electric Macan last year, Porsche plans to add this third EV to its lineup later in 2025.
Even though Porsche has announced new plug-in hybrid and gasoline-powered versions, the company has confirmed that the next generation of the Cayenne will also be fully electric. The current Cayenne SUV received significant updates in 2024, but Porsche's CEO, Oliver Blume, has stated that the EV version will be a leader in the electric SUV market. These are big words from Porsche, but judging by the Macan reception, the Germans might be onto something.
Last year, the first test units of the electric Cayenne left the Porsche factory, giving us a first look at the upcoming SUV during road testing. The electric SUV keeps the classic Porsche design but includes some new touches that make it clear it's an EV. The latest photos of a new Cayenne EV being tested in the US suggest that buyers will have two body styles to choose from.
The images, shared by KindelAuto, show what looks like a coupe version with a sleeker, more crossover-like shape and a roofline that slopes down more sharply, adding to its sporty appearance. While more details will be shared closer to the official launch, it's known that this EV will use the PPE platform. This is the same base used for the current Macan EV and the Audi Q6 e-Tron. Porsche has mentioned that this platform will provide "comprehensive" improvements to the new electric Cayenne SUV.
The Cayenne is about the same size as the Audi Q8 e-tron, but the latter is built on the older MLB platform. If Porsche is serious about "leading the electric SUV market," we should expect to see the entry-level model sporting the Macan 4S powertrain with at least 500 horsepower, with more powerful versions borrowing powertrain options from the Taycan. Will we see a 1,000-horsepower electric Cayenne?
The Porsche Cayenne EV is expected to be officially released later this year as a 2026 model. Porsche is also developing an even larger, high-end electric SUV, known internally as "K1," which is planned for launch in 2027. The question is - with Xiaomi bringing the YU7 to markets outside of China, is the new Cayenne too little too late? We'll know the answer to this question soon enough.
