Renault 5 E-Tech Electric video teaser released

Renault is set to unveil the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric at the 2024 Geneva International Motor Show, promising a modern twist on the iconic Renault 5. As the date of unveiling slowly approaches, Renault's teaser campaign is picking up speed. The company has just released the first official video teaser, leaving very little to the imagination.

Renault's new electric wonder will come with two battery options, including a 52 kWh powerhouse that claims a range of up to 249 miles WLTP. The impressive range might catch the eye, but let's not forget we're still dealing with WLTP figures – your real-world experience may vary. The new Renault 5 is compact, designed for urban driving, and will be the first vehicle on the new AmpR Small platform. Fancy tech like V2G (vehicle-to-grid) will be available, promising to let you sell electricity back to the grid.

Aesthetic-wise, Renault seems to be playing the nostalgia card with a teaser campaign themed "R5VOLUTION IS BACK." The headlights, reminiscent of the 1972 model, now feature a center mark resembling the pupil of the human eye, giving the R5 a peculiar human-like expression. Cute, but does it make the car any better?

The air intake on the bonnet has vanished, replaced by a charge indicator light forming the iconic number "5" when fully charged. Sure, it's a high-tech feature, but is it really necessary? Perhaps Renault believes that electric cars need to scream their electric-ness from every angle.

The wheel arches are said to give the R5 a broader stance, reminiscent of the R5 Turbo. But, in the end, it's just an attempt to underline a "unique and instantly recognizable personality." We'll see if the streets recognize it as more than just a flashy compact car.

Renault claims that vertical rear lights enhance aerodynamics, preventing air turbulence. While it sounds fancy, let's not forget we're talking about a city car, not a Formula 1 racer. But who knows, maybe your grocery run will be more aerodynamic now.

And just in case you're an impatient R5 enthusiast, there's an exclusive skip-the-line program called R5 R Pass. Because nothing says "cutting-edge" like a waiting list. Price? Renault promises it will be around $26,800. How far will the actual price stray from the target is anybody's guess.
