Renault 5 E-Tech teaser reveals battery capacity, pricing and key design elements

Renault is almost ready to unveil the highly anticipated Renault 5 E-Tech Electric - it's going official at the 2024 Geneva International Motor Show. Yet the company couldn't wait that long and released an extensive teaser for its upcoming disruptive model. We got to learn the size, battery capacity and even pricing for it, along with some design bits.

The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric aims to channel the spirit of its predecessor, with a design that pays homage to the classic model. The most striking feature is its headlights, which mirror the original shape, but feature a mark in the center that resembles the pupil of an eye.

One cool change at the front is the replacement air intake found on the historic model's bonnet. The electric Renault 5 sports a charge indicator light instead that forms the number "5" when the car is fully charged.

The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric will measure just 3.92m, but its wheel arches are designed create a broader stance, giving it a compact yet powerful look. The unique graphic design reinforces its distinct personality, reminiscent of the R5 Turbo.

The vertical rear lights serve a dual purpose, extending the side panel while contributing to aerodynamic performance by reducing air turbulence. It's all about efficiency in this electric era.

Renault will launch the R5 R Pass, allowing customers in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, United Kingdom, Belgium and the Netherlands to secure they'll be among the first to take deliveries with a €150 deposit.

More excitingly Renault confirmed the 5 E-Tech Electric will feature a 52 kWh battery with a WLTP range of up to 249 miles. A second 40 kWh battery option will become available at a later date.

The new R5 is built on the AmpR Small platform, designed for a fun driving experience. With multi-link rear suspension usually found in higher-end vehicles, it promises excellent stability and road handling.

Inside the vehicle, drivers will encounter "reno", Renault's official avatar, delivering a fully immersive digital experience. Equipped with a bidirectional onboard charger, the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric is the first production vehicle to feature V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technology. This technology, supported by Mobilize, allows drivers to sell excess electricity back to the grid, ultimately saving on charging costs and reducing overall electricity bills.

Finally Renault gave us an indication of the pricing of the upcoming Renault 5 E-Tech Electric. It will start around $26,800, making it really competitive with B-segment hybrids.
