Simulated gear shifting arrives in the 2027 Porsche Taycan

Porsche wants to reverse a downward sales trend for its flagship electric sedan. Last year, the German automaker delivered just 16,339 examples of the all-electric Taycan across the globe - the lowest annual sales performance since the launch of the model. It is also a drop of more than half from the high point in 2021, when buyers took delivery of 41,296 units. To defend its market position against rivals like the new Mercedes-AMG GT 4 Door, the manufacturer decided to give the 2027 Porsche Taycan an unusual refresh with software tricks designed for drivers who still miss the combustion engine.

The most discussed update for the 2027 model year is a feature called E-Shift. This software brings simulated gear changes to a vehicle that doesn't really need them. Drivers can now use steering wheel-mounted paddles to shift through eight virtual gear ratios. The system even simulates a rev limiter at the top of each gear and applies gear-specific drag torque. This drag mimics the engine braking effect that drivers experience in traditional gasoline vehicles. Other brands like Hyundai, Mercedes, and Ferrari already use similar digital gear simulation tools in their premium EVs.

An ironic detail of this software update involves the actual mechanical setup of the vehicle. The electric Taycan already has a real, functioning two-speed automatic transmission on its rear axle, but this factory hardware changes gear entirely on its own without notifying the driver. When a driver activates E-Shift, the real two-speed transmission continues its automated tasks silently in the background. The eight selectable gears exist purely within the vehicle software. To enhance the illusion, engineers modified the torque curves and altered the synthetic Electric Sport Sound system to match the virtual shift points.

Porsche will offer the E-Shift feature across the entire Taycan model range, but the pricing structure varies. Only buyers who choose the top-shelf Turbo GT variant will get the simulated shifting package as standard. Customers who purchase any other model in the lineup will have to check a box on the options list and pay extra to get the steering wheel paddles and software update.

Simulation software aside, the refreshed Taycan gets major updates to its electrical core. The base Taycan, the Taycan 4, and the Taycan 4S now have the larger 105 kWh Performance Battery Plus as standard. This battery pack supports 320 kW DC fast charging when connected to a compatible high-speed DC station. The vehicle dashboard also gets a new battery state-of-health monitor, helping owners track the long-term condition and degradation of the lithium-ion cells over time.

The physical charging setup changes for vehicles sold in the United States. US models now come with a NACS port integrated into the passenger-side front fender, allowing direct access to the Tesla Supercharger network. The only exception to this design is the track-focused Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach package, which skips the NACS port. On all other US versions, the driver-side fender keeps its standard J1772 AC port for home charging, and the company throws in a CCS adapter for free.

There are revisions also to the cabin electronics and digital screens with an updated version of the Porsche Communication Management infotainment software. The new hardware has five times more computing power than the previous system, which means faster menu loading times and immediate responses to touch inputs. The visual interface gets a design overhaul with minimalist icons and clearer system graphics. Users can customize the main screens by adding easily accessible widgets and downloading third-party applications from a dedicated digital storefront.

The vehicle cabin gains improved everyday convenience features. The onboard artificial intelligence voice control system can now handle natural conversation patterns. Passengers can ask consecutive follow-up questions without repeating the standard wake phrase to get the computer's attention. Additionally, the integrated wireless smartphone charging pad gets a power boost up to 25W. Porsche states this upgrade fills a phone battery approximately 1.5 times faster than the older pad design. All system software updates can now be installed completely over the air.

For customers who value visual personalization, the company expanded its exterior paint collection. The update adds 16 new options to the Paint to Sample catalog, raising the total number of available factory colors to 153.

The order books are already open - in the United States, pricing starts from $111,900 for the entry-level, rear-wheel-drive base model. This price does not include a mandatory $2,350 delivery, processing, and handling fee. The manufacturer expects customer deliveries to start during the upcoming fall season. In Germany, the new Taycan starts from €102,600, and UK prices haven't been confirmed yet.
