Some new Teslas' computers fail within a few tens or hundreds of miles
Tesla is apparently having "major issues" with its self-driving computers failing on brand-new cars, according to a new report. Multiple owners have apparently complained about this, and again, we're talking about brand-new vehicles here.
This problem is allegedly so widespread that it's now "overwhelming Tesla's service". So if you're wondering just what is going on, here's what an investigation found.
The problem arises on a new version of Tesla's HW4/AI4 onboard self-driving computer, which some Tesla employees refer to as AI4.1. These computers are short-circuiting, and the cause may be the low-voltage battery, which could be short-circuiting the computers during the camera calibration process.
The computer failures occur once delivery of a new vehicle is taken, within the first few tens to hundreds of miles. Once the computer fails, things like cameras, GPS navigation, range estimations, and even active safety features simply don't work anymore. Affected Tesla cars have all been built over the past few months and all have the new computer.
Tesla is yet to issue a service bulletin about this problem, and according to one source the company is playing down any safety concerns to avoid people believing their new cars are not drivable. Tesla is allegedly working on a temporary software patch, but the main remedy for this issue is a computer replacement, that may come in the future.
