Tesla to bring 7-seat Model Y to China and Europe

Max McDee, 29 August 2024

The latest online gossip has it that Tesla is gearing up to introduce the seven-seat version of its popular Model Y in both the Chinese and European markets as early as October. Reports indicate that production may already be underway at Tesla's Gigafactory in Shanghai, although the company has yet to provide an official confirmation.

This potential expansion of the Model Y lineup could be seen as an attempt to liven up sales, especially as Tesla has no plans of refreshing its best-selling model in the near future. Tesla's overall automotive revenue saw a 7% decline in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the previous year.

The seven-seat option for the Model Y was first showcased in 2019 when the vehicle was initially unveiled, but it took until 2021 for Tesla to make it available in the US. Currently, the seven-seat configuration is exclusive to the all-wheel-drive, dual-motor Model Y Long Range variant and comes at an additional cost of $2,000.

If the rumors hold true, the seven-seat Model Y produced in China will weigh approximately 99 lb more than its five-seat counterpart. The vehicle has reportedly already cleared the necessary certification processes in Europe.

In China, the Model Y has been a resounding success. From January to July 2024, Tesla sold an impressive 298,384 units, making it the country's best-selling battery electric vehicle. The popularity of the Model Y can be attributed to Chinese consumers' preference for spacious interiors, and the seven-seat version will play into that requirement quite well.
