Tesla Model Y becomes Europe's best-selling car in November

Max McDee, 29 December 2022

In the month of November, Tesla Model Y saw higher sales than Volkswagen Golf, the traditionally top-selling passenger vehicle in Europe. As a result, the Model Y became the best-selling passenger vehicle overall in the region for that month. This success can be attributed to the increasing popularity of electric vehicles and the appeal of the Model Y's sleek design and advanced technology.

The electric crossover Model Y experienced a significant resurgence in November, selling 19,144 units and experiencing an increase of over 260% compared to the same month the previous year. This marks a comeback for the vehicle, which had dropped out of the top 50 in October. In September, the Model Y was also the top-selling car in all of Europe. These impressive sales figures demonstrate the growing demand for electric vehicles and the popularity of the Model Y specifically.

In November, Tesla saw a significant increase in its sales in Europe, with a total of 31,820 units sold, a 97% increase from the previous month. This increase can largely be attributed to the impressive sales of the Model Y, which saw a 260% increase in sales compared to the same month the previous year.

Toyota Yaris placed third in European sales with 17,309 units sold, while the Dacia Sandero took second place with a volume of 18,746 units, a 16% increase from the previous month. The Model Y was the top-selling car in Europe for the month, with a volume of 19,144 units sold, a 150% increase from the same month the previous year. It was also the only electric vehicle to make it onto the sales podium in Europe for that month.

According to early data from Dataforce, as reported by Automotive News Europe, the Peugeot 208 has become the top-selling vehicle in all of Europe, with a total of 193,743 units sold this year. The Peugeot 208 is available in both traditional and electric models, and it is expected to end the year 2022 as Europe's overall best-selling vehicle.

Six different models have been the top seller in Europe for at least one month this year, but only two of them have been all-electric: the Tesla Model 3 (in March) and the Tesla Model Y (in September and November).

Tesla Model Y becomes Europe's best-selling car in November

In November, the Tesla Model 3 overtook the Model Y as the most popular vehicle in Germany, which is the largest automobile market in Europe. According to data from Germany's national auto agency, the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, the Model 3 sedan surpassed the Model Y crossover as the most popular type of electric car registered in the country. It is notable that the Model 3 has gained popularity in Germany, which is a significant market for electric vehicles.

Tesla sold 3,687 Model Y vehicles in Germany, while selling 6,811 Model 3 vehicles last month. The previous month also marked the start of deliveries for the updated Model S and Model X in Germany, with Tesla selling a total of 106 and 35 units of each model, respectively. These sales figures show that the Model 3 was more popular than the Model Y in Germany for that month, but both models have had success in the market. The relatively low sales of the Model S and Model X suggest that they may not be as popular as the other models in the country.

Tesla saw record-level deliveries in Germany last month, with a 93% year-over-year increase for a total of 10,819 cars. This marks a significant milestone for the company, as November was its second-best sales month ever in the country, second only to September. These strong sales figures demonstrate the growing demand for electric vehicles in Germany and the success of Tesla in the market.

Earlier this year, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, predicted that the Model Y would become the top-selling car in the world overall by 2023. The recent success of the Model Y, including its position at the top of the sales rankings in Europe and other regions, supports the possibility of this prediction coming true. It remains to be seen whether the Model Y will continue to perform well and achieve this level of global success in the coming years.
