Tesla plans to launch six-seat Model Y in China
We only just heard Tesla was preparing to launch a seven-seat Model Y version in China and Europe, and now the latest report claims the company is also gearing up to launch a six-seat version in China by late 2025.
The six-seat configuration shows Tesla's determination to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving Chinese landscape. While the 7-seat Model Y is available in the US, it seems the company recognizes that a different approach is needed to capture the hearts and wallets of Chinese consumers. A six-seat layout offers a balance between passenger capacity and comfort, addressing concerns about the cramped third row often associated with 7-seat SUVs.
The move also aligns with reports of a broader production ramp-up at Tesla's Shanghai Gigafactory. Suppliers have reportedly been asked to prepare for a double-digit increase in Model Y production, suggesting that Tesla is anticipating strong demand for its new version. However, details about how the company plans to achieve this production boost remain unclear, especially given the pending approval for the factory's expansion.
Meanwhile, Tesla's domestic competitors are not standing still. Several Chinese automakers have unveiled Model Y rivals this year, boasting spacious interiors and competitive pricing. Nio's Onvo L60 and Zeekr 7X are just two examples of the growing number of EVs vying for market share in China. Tesla's six-seat Model Y could be seen as a direct response to these challenges, offering a unique selling proposition to differentiate itself from the competition.
It's worth pointing out that this isn't the only change in store for the Model Y. Reports suggest that Tesla is also working on a revamped 5-seat version, codenamed Juniper, which could launch as early as 2025. While the exact specifications and pricing of the six-seat Model Y remain under wraps, it's clear that Tesla is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to stay ahead of the curve.
