Tesla reclaims top spot as world’s favorite EV maker

Max McDee, 06 April 2026

The high-stakes race for the title of world's top electric car maker took another sharp turn. For the last few months, everyone watched to see if the American giant Tesla could catch up to its biggest rival, BYD. The results for the first three months of 2026 are finally in, and the news is big. Tesla has officially reclaimed its throne as the global leader in pure electric cars, pushing the Chinese automaker into second place.

This victory comes after a period where many people thought Tesla might lose its lead for good. In the final months of 2025, BYD surged ahead, selling more battery-powered vehicles than any other company. But the start of 2026 told a different story. Between January and March, Tesla delivered 358,023 EVs to customers across the globe. This was a 6.5 percent increase compared to the same time last year. It might sound like a small jump, but it was more than enough to beat the competition.

BYD, based in the city of Shenzhen, had a much tougher start to the year. The company sells both pure electric cars and hybrids, and when we look only at its battery-only cars, the sales dropped by 25.5 percent. BYD delivered 310,389 of these vehicles in the first quarter, letting Tesla beat it by nearly 48,000 cars.

The answer to why BYD hit such a big speed bump lies mostly in China. The company sells a huge number of its cars within its own country, but the Chinese government changed the rules for people who want to buy EVs. Until recently, the government gave people plenty of support to help them switch from gas cars to electric ones. On January 1, a new "trade-in" rule started - buyers only get a discount worth 12 percent of the car's price, and that discount cannot go higher than RMB 20,000, which is about $2,900. In the past, everyone got that full amount regardless of how much the car cost.

Taxes also made things more expensive for Chinese drivers. Last year, people did not have to pay any sales tax when they bought a new electric car. This year, the government added a 5 percent tax. If someone buys a car that costs RMB 100,000, these two changes mean they have to pay RMB 5,000 more in tax, and they get RMB 8,000 less in help from the government. That difference is enough to make many families wait before buying a new vehicle.

Tesla managed to stay ahead because it sells cars all over the world. Its factory in Shanghai is still the heart of its operation - it built 213,398 cars in the first three months of 2026. That is more than half of all the cars Tesla sold worldwide during that time.

To keep people interested in its cars, Tesla started offering special deals that no one else had tried yet. In China, potential buyers can get seven-year loans with very low interest rates - much longer than the usual five-year limit. Because of this change, anyone can buy a Model 3 or a Model Y for less than RMB 2,000 a month after they pay about RMB 80,000 upfront ($290 and $11,600, respectively).

Even though BYD lost the top spot for the quarter, the company is not giving up. March was actually a very good month with 300,222 vehicles sold in that month alone, which was a huge jump from February. There is extra help from local city governments coming in, and higher gas prices are making BYD cars look like a way better deal.

The battle between these two companies is far from over. Both are constantly changing prices and adding new features to EVs to win over drivers. For now, Tesla fans can celebrate. The American company proved that it could weather the storm and come out on top once again. Let's see now for how long it'll manage to hold on to the top spot.
