Tesla shipments are down in Europe despite rapidly growing EV market

Ro, 24 March 2025

The Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) published its report on vehicle registrations in Europe, and it brought excellent news for the European EV market, but bad news for Tesla.

Tesla sales are down in Europe despite increasing overall EV sales on the continent

According to the numbers, Tesla's sales crashed some 40% in February year-on-year, and are overall down 43% since the beginning of 2025. In stark contrast, the entire European EV market grew 28% compared to the same period last year. The EV sales now account for 15% of the entire market. In contrast, overall automotive sales in Europe are down 3% year-on-year due to slump in the other vehicle categories.

Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands saw the biggest EV sales growth in the first two months of this year, with 41%, 38% and 25% rises, respectively. Not coincidentally these three markets accounted for 64% of the total EV shipments.

Some may argue that Tesla is just seeing a temporary slowdown as buyers anticipate the facelifted Model Y, but that's unlikely to be the case given that sales of other models have gone down, too. Model 3, for example, used to sell like hot cakes, whereas now, the vehicle experienced a 29% decline in Europe.
