Tesla says goodbye to its original icons with the exclusive Signature Edition
Tesla is finally closing the book on the two vehicles that made the company famous. After 14 years of production, the Tesla Model S and the Tesla Model X are reaching the end of the line. To celebrate this long journey, the company is releasing a very special version of these electric cars. This final run is called the "Signature Edition."
If you were hoping to hop online and order one, you might be disappointed - this release is invite-only. Tesla sent special emails to a small group of people, giving them the chance to buy these EVs. Only 350 of these cars will ever exist since Tesla is building 250 units of the Model S Plaid and just 100 units of the Model X Plaid. If your inbox is empty, you are likely out of luck. It is a very small club, and the entry fee is quite high.
The look of these cars is meant to stand out from any other Tesla on the road. Both models come in a brand-new color called "Garnet Red" - deep red paint exclusive to the Signature Edition. Tesla added some gold accents: the "T" logo on the front and the Plaid badge on the back are finished in gold. Even the lights under the doors show a gold Plaid logo.
Inside, the cabin feels like a high-end lounge. Tesla chose a white theme for the interior with Alcantara covering much of it and seats getting gold piping along the edges. To remind you how rare the car is, there is a special plate on the dashboard. Each car also has "Signature" markings on the door sills and a special key fob. Even the interior lights have a unique "lighting sequence" when you get inside.
The two models have some technical differences, too. The Model S version comes with carbon ceramic brakes and bright gold calipers. The Model X keeps the standard red calipers but gets massive 22-inch Machina wheels. One important thing to note about the Model X is that it only comes in the six-seat layout. You cannot get it with five or seven seats in this special edition.
Tesla is including a lot of extras to justify the high price. Every Signature Edition comes with the "Luxe Package." This bundle includes "Full Self-Driving" software and free Supercharging. On top of that, Tesla is giving these buyers four years of free maintenance and free premium internet for as long as they own the car.
Of course, all these gold badges and "free" perks are not cheap. Both the Tesla Model S and the Tesla Model X Signature Editions cost $159,420. This is a huge jump in price compared to the regular models. A standard Model S Plaid usually costs $124,990, and the Model X Plaid is $129,990. You are essentially paying an extra $30,000 for the paint, the gold trim, and the bragging rights of owning one of the last units ever made.
Tesla is stopping production of these famous EVs because it is moving in a new direction. The factory in Fremont, California, needs space for new projects. Tesla wants to focus on building the Optimus robot and making more affordable electric cars for the general public. To say a proper goodbye, Tesla is planning a big party in May. The event will happen at sunset - a poetic way to end the era of the cars that changed the industry forever.
