Tesla Semi gets EPA green light, deliveries can start in December
As with all of its other models, Tesla's Semi has definitely been a very long time in the making. But now, it's closer to release than ever.
The US EPA has just assessed the Semi and issued it a Certificate of Conformity for the stream of commerce. This essentially means that it's now legal for Tesla to start selling the Semi.
It's good timing too, as at the beginning of this month Elon Musk announced that Tesla was planning to start Semi deliveries to PepsiCo on December 1. It's worth pointing out, however, that Tesla has previously claimed imminent deliveries for the Semi twice in the past two years, so some people may have been understandably skeptical about how things would go this time around.
And yet, it looks like it's the real deal - finally, five years after the initial announcement. The Semi has the Certificate of Conformity from the EPA valid until the end of next year. This is standard procedure, as these are always only valid for one model year of production. Tesla will need to go through the same certification process again for the 2024 Semi.
Tesla can now use the Semi on public roads in the US and deliver it to clients, of which the first one will be PepsiCo. Tesla is already targeting a whopping 50,000 units produced in 2024. Elon Musk claims the Semi has a 500-mile range when fully loaded, which remains to be put through real-life testing.
