Tesla Giga Mexico to start car production as early as next year

Vlad, 08 March 2023

Giga Mexico will be by far Tesla's biggest car making factory yet, and it's only very recently that the company unveiled its plans to build it. And yet, construction may actually start before the end of this month, according to Samuel Garcia, the Governor of the Mexican State of Nuevo Leon, where Giga Mexico will be located.

Garcia says Tesla is currently waiting for the final permits for construction. That would be an impressively quick turnaround for getting all the documentation in order for such a huge project. But it's not even the most extraordinary thing Governor Garcia said.

Tesla's Giga Mexico may start car production as early as next year

It turns out construction of the plant could be so fast that Giga Mexico will already be churning out cars next year, in 2024. That's not an impossible feat, but insanely complicated to achieve given how many things can and do generally delay construction plans left and right.

Tesla does however seem to want to get Giga Mexico going very quickly, and, very importantly, the company appears to have a lot of support from both the state and federal authorities in the country. This may actually make the aforementioned timeline for starting production feasible.

According to Mexican officials, Giga Mexico will be the world's biggest EV factory, with investment worth around $5 billion. Subsequent phases of development of Giga Mexico could see it make components such as chips and batteries too, at some later point.
