Volkswagen ID.3 GTX Performance is a 322 hp GTI for the EV age
Volkswagen is expanding its electric lineup with the ID.3 GTX Performance, an even more potent variant of the ID.3 GTX. With 240 kW (322 hp) on board, this electric hot hatch is dubbed "the sportiest electric Volkswagen yet" by the company. It boasts a 0 to 62 mph acceleration in just 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 124 mph, making it a decent contender in the electric performance segment.
The ID.3 GTX Performance is the first model to feature an enhanced version of the Volkswagen Performance drive system. This upgrade increases the output from 210 kW in the ID.3 GTX to 240 kW, sitting just 10 kW shy of the VW ID.7 GTX. The electric drive motor delivers maximum torque of 402 lb-ft, promising rapid acceleration and exhilarating performance.
The electric powertrain is paired with a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery, providing a WLTP range of up to 373 miles on a single charge. With innovative charging and thermal management, including battery pre-conditioning, the ID.3 GTX Performance can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 26 minutes at DC quick-charging stations.
The ID.3 GTX Performance benefits from a GTX-specific running gear with stronger stabilizers and a MacPherson front setup plus a five-link rear axle configuration. The progressive steering system, adapted to the ID.3 GTX, comes as standard, while the optional Sport DCC adaptive chassis control further enhances handling. The Vehicle Dynamics Manager uses refined algorithms to analyze sensor signals and adjust the shock absorbers accordingly, delivering precise handling in all driving conditions.
The ID.3 GTX Performance stands apart from the rest of the lineup with unique design elements, including a GTX-specific front bumper with a new black air intake and signature light. The 20-inch Skagen GTX wheels can be ordered in black for an even sportier look. Inside, the GTX-specific features continue, creating a premium and personalized atmosphere.
The infotainment runs on a 12.9-inch display and the latest generation software, including the IDA voice assistant with ChatGPT. Optional features include an augmented reality head-up display, a redesigned Wellness app, and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.
Standard driver assist systems include cruise control (upgradable to Adaptive Cruise Control ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist), lane keeping system Lane Assist, oncoming vehicle braking when turning function, and Dynamic Road Sign Display. The Car2X traffic hazard alert function is also included as standard.
The new ID.3 GTX Performance starts at $56,115 in Germany (before any subsidies), but the price quickly climbs with additional options. Interior package "Plus" with sports seats will set you back $3,770, ticking the "IQ.DRIVE" option for assisted driving adds another $2,795.
Comfort package with improved infotainment costs $1,700 and panoramic roof comes in at $998. It’s interesting that VW wants another $1,060 for a heat pump - adding it to the long list of options brings the price well north of $66,500. That’s a big ask when you consider that Tesla Model 3 performance comes in at $62,760 with significantly more performance.
