Full Volkswagen ID.7 details revealed before its next week debut

The 2023 VW ID.7 will have its global premiere on April 18 but the Chinese MIIT clearly did not get the memo. The regulatory body just released a full set of photos and details of the upcoming ID.7 - in China, every vehicle approved for sale has to be announced and citizens are given a chance to comment and even object to such approval.

The Chinese version of the ID.7 will be assembled by the FAW-VW joint venture at the Guangdong factory. Interestingly, the model destined for the Chinese market is called ID.7 Vizzion - exactly like the concept car introduced first by Volkswagen.

The all-electric flagship from VW sits on the same MEB platform as the entire ID family but at 4.95 meters is by far the largest vehicle in the lineup - it is 20 cm longer than the European VW ID. Buzz and nearly as long as its US long-wheelbase sibling. It’s not a light car -at 2,122 kg it is a serious machine.

This brings us to powertrains - the Chinese filing reveals only one electric motor with a 201 hp output. That’s the 150 kW motor that powers the VW ID. 5 Pro Performance. The ID.7 has its top speed limited to 155 km/h and the European version will likely get that speed lifted to 160 km/h just like the other vehicles from the ID family.

The car will be offered with 4 different wheel designs coming in two sizes - either 18” or 19” and the filing offers us a preview of those designs. The battery is listed as NCM ternary pack with a nominal capacity of 77 kWh. The CLTC range is quoted at 700 km but as we know, that is extremely optimistic and in real life, it’ll be much closer to 500 km.

The European version will hopefully introduce more powertrains, there will likely be the dual-motor GTX version available later in time. The Chinese premiere of the ID.7 is taking place on April 18 at the Shanghai Auto Show and the car will go on sale in the second half of this year. China will get it first, with Europe and the US to follow.

This is hideous. There is just no design in this whatsoever, you can tell it's been created around the platform and the batteries. Why is it so tall and slab-sided? *Sigh*
