Volkswagen teases its next electric powerhouse - the ID.7 Tourer GTX

Max McDee, 12 March 2024

Hot on the heels of the ID.7 Tourer, the German automaker has just announced the performance-oriented GTX version of it, with a promise that this electric wagon is packing serious heat.

While the standard ID.7 Tourer prioritizes range and family practicality, the GTX is all about delivering an exhilarating driving experience. This is Volkswagen's answer to performance EVs in the growing electric wagon segment, offering a tempting alternative to the typical high-performance SUVs.

So, what sets the GTX Tourer apart? Well, for starters, it trades the standard Tourer's single-motor setup for a more powerful dual-motor system that sends electrifying power to all four wheels. Though we're still awaiting official figures, Volkswagen tells us the ID.7 GTX Tourer will likely surpass the base model's 282 horsepower output. For perspective, the ID.X Performance concept, with a similar drivetrain, boasted a whopping 550 horsepower.

We are most likely to see the same powertrain (with slightly adjusted power output) that we already know from the ID.Buzz GTX. Cupra Tavascan is another model from VW's stables that shares the same 340 hp dual-motor setup.

This power hike means the ID.7 GTX Tourer will offer quicker acceleration than its standard sibling. And while a wagon might not scream "sports car," Volkswagen's handling know-how will surely make this EV a fun ride on twisty roads.

Besides the extra muscle, the GTX Tourer will also flaunt subtle yet sporty design cues to distinguish itself. These include unique alloy wheels, a revised front fascia, and a possible rear spoiler – details designed to turn heads and subtly announce its performance credentials. Inside, expect a sporty steering wheel design with a "GTX" badge and contrast stitching to enhance the sporty vibe.

And, of course, the ID.7 GTX won't sacrifice practicality for performance. As a wagon, it maintains the standard Tourer's generous cargo space, offering room for all your passengers and gear. Volkswagen will also equip the GTX with the same advanced technologies, like the head-up display and augmented reality navigation, found in other ID.7 variants.

While details are still emerging, the ID.7 GTX Tourer stands to be a compelling option for drivers seeking a spacious and practical electric vehicle with a thrilling edge. The official premiere is coming this Wednesday (March 13) where Volkswagen will finally lift the veil on its full specifications and pricing.
