VW ID. Buzz US pricing finally revealed - cheaper than in Europe

Max McDee, 21 August 2024

The much-anticipated VW ID. Buzz, an electric minivan that's been teased since 2017 and officially launched in Europe and the US last year, finally has a price tag. The good news is that in the US, the ID. Buzz starts at $61,545, slightly lower than its European counterpart, which despite being shorter, asks for the equivalent of nearly $68,000. $61k is still not exactly cheap, but at least it comes quite well-equipped.

All ID. Buzz models pack a 91-kWh battery. The rear-wheel drive, 282-horsepower version claims a 234-mile range, while the 335-horsepower, dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant gets 231 miles. Not bad for a minivan that can haul the whole family (and their luggage), but it's not all that impressive - it's 2024 and the battery tech has improved a lot. VW seems to be banking on the ID. Buzz being cute enough for customers to ignore this not-so-small detail.

There are three trims to choose from: Pro S, Pro S Plus, and 1st Edition. All-wheel drive is only available on the Pro S Plus and 1st Edition, adding $4,500 to the sticker price. Pro S starts at $61,545, Pro S Plus will set you back at least $65,045, and the 1st Edition asking price is $67,045. These prices include the $1,550 destination charge.

For comparison, the Kia EV9, another three-row electric SUV, starts at a lower $56,395. However, the ID. Buzz offers more standard features, and it has a retro-inspired design that's sure to turn heads. The Tesla Model X might not exactly be in the same bag - yes, it has three rows, but with a starting price of nearly $80,000, it's in a different league. A seven-seat Tesla Model Y would be a better competitor here, but its third-row seats are really just for kids.

Even the base Pro S trim of the ID. Buzz is anything but basic. It comes standard with 20-inch alloy wheels, animated LED lights, and a choice of two interior color schemes. Leatherette upholstery is standard across all trims, adding a touch of luxury.

The Pro S has a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated and ventilated front seats with massage and memory functions, and a heated steering wheel. Three-zone automatic climate control and a nine-speaker audio system keep everyone comfortable. Safety is also a priority with VW's IQ.Drive suite of driver-assistance features included as standard.

Upgrade to the Pro S Plus, and you unlock the option of a two-tone paint job for an additional $995. You also get a head-up display, surround-view cameras, and a 14-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system. Second-row captain's chairs are available as a standalone option or included with all-wheel drive, which also adds a heated windshield. Other options include an electrochromic panoramic sunroof and the Flexboard, a clever system that creates a flat floor when the rear seats are folded.

The top-of-the-line 1st Edition comes loaded with all the bells and whistles, plus unique wheels, badging, floor mats, and some surprise gifts for the owner. It's only available in white with a choice of five two-tone color combinations and will be limited to the first year of production.
