Xiaomi unveils 1,548 hp SU7 Ultra set to shatter records

Xiaomi held its largest event of the year, where it half a dozen new devices, but arguably the most exciting product to be unveiled by CEO Lei Jun is the SU7 Ultra prototype. This track-focused performance EV, is an enhanced version of the Xiaomi SU7 Max, featuring the company's new V8s electric motors.

The SU7 Ultra sports an even more aggressive design accentuated by a striking lightning-yellow finish. A low front spoiler scoops all the air and channels it through the hood, extended side skirts smooth out the airflow, and the oversized rear wing is responsible for producing extra downforce.

The Ultra introduces Xiaomi's proprietary HyperEngine V8s electric motor, the company's most powerful yet. With a maximum speed of 27,200 rpm, 578 horsepower, and a peak torque of 468 lb-ft, this motor alone is a serious piece of kit. But a single motor wouldn't be enough for the Ultra to deliver on its bold claims.

The SU7 Ultra Prototype is equipped with three electric motors – two V8S and one V6S – generating a combined maximum output of 1,548 hp. That's more power than Lucid Air Sapphire or Zeekr 001 FR. In fact, the Ultra packs nearly 52% more power than the Tesla Model S Plaid.

To make the most of those three electric motors, the SU7 Ultra boasts the world's first Kirin 2 battery, jointly developed by Xiaomi and CATL. This 897V battery pack offers up to 1,330 kW of discharge power, and it still pushes over 800 kW when running at 20% SoC.

Once this new battery runs out of juice, it can be recharged at 5.2C rates - that means the battery can be recharged in under 12 minutes. In simple terms, assuming the Ultra sports the same 101 kWh capacity as the other SU7s, it supports charging at over 520 kW.

The SU7 Ultra also has all its body panels made from carbon fiber body panels, reducing its weight to to 4,189 lb, some 661 lb less than the standard SU7.

With all these technological advancements, the SU7 Ultra claims breathtaking acceleration figures. It blasts from zero to 62 mph in a scant 1.97 seconds, reaches 124 mph in 5.96 seconds, and has a top speed exceeding 217 mph.

To rein in all that power, the SU7 Ultra is equipped with high-performance AP Racing six-piston forged fixed calipers and race pads, both front and rear. These brakes can withstand temperatures exceeding 800 degrees and work together with motor energy recovery, and achieving a deceleration of over 2.36G. The result? A zero-to-hundred braking distance of a mere 984 inches.

The company has set a bold goal: the SU7 Ultra Prototype will attempt to break the Nurburgring non-production lap record in October this year, with plans to challenge the production lap record in 2025. This means there's a road-legal version of the Ultra on the way. Speed demons rejoice!
