2023 BMW i7 teased during acoustic test

Enrique, 23 February 2022

BMW is preparing to launch its full-size EV sedan, and in the latest episode of its teaser campaign, the carmaker shows the 2023 i7 in full camouflage undergoing its sound emissions testing at BMW’s Research and Innovation Center (FIZ) in Munich. This is where the vehicle is tested for sound in the cabin, as well as the sounds emitted when the vehicle is being driven.

The test incorporates motor noise, rolling noise, vibrations, and sounds produced by wind noise. Artificial noises emitted are required for pedestrians to be able to hear a slowly approaching EV, that would otherwise produce very little sound.

In addition to developing a bespoke mount for the electric motors on the i7, a foam absorber is used in the tires, along with flush door handles to diminish road and wind noise in the cabin. Since there’s no engine to counteract noises the EV will make, BMW is careful to ensure that there aren’t any unwanted sounds in the cabin while driving.

BMW is expected to unveil the i7 in months that follow. The latter is the first time the car maker will produce the 7 Series as a fully electric vehicle.
