Bentley teases first EV - a luxurious SUV that will launch in 2026
Bentley has long been associated with powerful gasoline engines and exquisite interiors. However, the winds of change are blowing, and even this bastion of tradition is embracing the electric future. The company has pushed back its target for an all-electric lineup to 2035, but at the same time, it has announced plans to launch its first electric vehicle in 2026. Its first step into the world of EVs will take the form of a "luxury urban SUV."
Bentley's journey towards electrification began in 2018 with the Bentayga Hybrid, and the company now offers plug-in hybrid versions of the Continental GT and Flying Spur. Despite this, Bentley acknowledges that its current customer base isn't clamoring for electric vehicles. CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser admitted that there's not a lot of demand for EVs from traditional Bentley buyers.
Bentley is taking a measured approach to electrification. The company plans to introduce a new EV or plug-in hybrid every year until 2035. Interestingly, Bentley hasn't ruled out the possibility of releasing new internal combustion engine vehicles in the coming years, suggesting that the transition will be gradual.
Details about Bentley's first EV are still scarce, but the company has revealed that it will be an SUV, smaller than the Bentayga, with a length of under 197 inches. This puts it in a similar size category as the Mercedes EQE SUV or Audi Q8 e-tron. In fact, the new Bentley EV will share its platform with the upcoming Porsche Cayenne EV. While Bentley hasn't disclosed any performance figures, the company promises that range and charging speed will be key priorities.
Bentley's decision to enter the EV market is a big step for the brand. It shows that even the most traditional automakers must eventually adapt to the changing landscape. While the company's current customers may not be demanding EVs, the move toward electrification is inevitable. With its first electric SUV, Bentley will attract a new generation of buyers.
The shift to electric powertrains presents a unique challenge for Bentley. The company built its reputation on powerful engines and a refined driving experience. Translating that into an electric vehicle will need a lot of engineering and design expertise. Bentley seems confident they can deliver.
