Canada strikes back with tariffs against the US, EVs are affected

Ro, 03 February 2025

After President Donald Trump introduced new tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods, Justin Trudeau's Canada promised to retaliate. It's doing so with 25% additional tariffs on US-made goods. The tariff package is estimated to impact $155 billion worth of goods and includes passenger vehicles and trucks (including EVs, of course), steel, aluminum, certain fruits and vegetables, aerospace products, beef, pork, dairy, recreational vehicles and recreational boats.

Canada strikes back with tariffs against the US, EVs are affected

The auto industry is uniquely affected as even cars assembled entirely in the US, use parts that are sourced outside the country, so one could argue that vehicle manufacturing is a global effort. And with countries engaging in trade wars, car manufacturers are trying to navigate in this uncertain environment and are forced to pass on the cost to consumers.

At the end of the day, all parts and vehicles coming from the US are subject to an additional tariff. That includes some Kia, Hyundai, Mercedes, VW and Acura-branded cars in addition to Teslas, Fords, Cadillacs, Lucids and Rivians. However, there are some entirely China-manufactured Teslas too, which are not affected by the newly introduced tariffs. Then again, Canada introduced a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs some time ago.

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out, but one thing is for sure, consumers will likely have to pay the bill.
