Changan debuts in Europe, promises to bring eight new EVs by 2027

Chinese automaker Changan has announced an ambitious plan to introduce eight new electric vehicles to the European market by 2027. The company will initially focus on offering a diverse range of electric cars to meet the varying needs of European consumers.

The first markets to see Changan-branded vehicles will be Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, and the UK. We can expect to see the first vehicles arriving in showrooms by September. The company is already working on a network of retail partners in Germany. Learning from mistakes made by BYD, Changan is setting up a parts distribution center in the Netherlands.

One of Changan's first vehicles to launch in Europe is the Avatr 12, a sleek electric sedan. This model has impressive specifications, including a dual-motor powertrain with a combined output of 425 kW. The Avatr 12 also promises a driving range of over 435 miles on a single charge. This extended range should address a key concern for many potential EV buyers. The vehicle's design is focused both on luxury and performance.

The company promises to bring to Europe the Avatr 11 as well. This Huawei-powered SUV is available in China in battery-only and EREV versions. The latter offers an impressive range of over 660 miles, while the battery-powered single-motor model achieves 506 miles thanks to its CATL-supplied 117 kWh battery pack. The dual-motor version is rated for 472 miles but it is a performance model capable of accelerating to 62 mph in just 3.9 seconds.

Following the Avatr, Changan plans to introduce a variety of other electric cars, including the Deepal S07 and Deepal S05 - a mid-size SUV and a compact crossover. The S07 is expected to retail for around $49,900 and offer up to 295 miles of range. It won't be breaking any speed records though, with its single 160 kW electric motor and 0 to 62 mph sprint time of 7.9 seconds. The charging is unusually slow, with support only for up to 93 kW - this means at least 45 minutes at a public charger.

Thankfully, Changan likes to throw a lot of gadgets into its vehicles, and the standard equipment list is comprehensive. There's a panoramic glass roof, a 15.6" central screen and head-up display, a 360-degree camera system, and electrically adjustable seats. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, leaving the customer with the only choice - the color of the interior.

Changan plans to establish a European headquarters to facilitate closer collaboration with local partners and enable the company to better understand the specific requirements of European consumers. The company is also investing in research and development to ensure its electric cars meet slightly higher European standards of quality and performance. The official debut of Avatr and Deepal brands will take place in Munich at the IAA Mobility between 9 and 14 of September.
