Citroen reinvents the family SUV with the C5 Aircross Concept

Citroen, known for its quirky designs and comfortable rides, has unveiled an interesting concept car that previews the next generation of its popular C5 Aircross SUV. The C5 Aircross Concept is more than just a facelift - it signals a complete transformation, embracing a bold new aesthetic and yes, it is going electric.

Unveiled at the 2024 Paris Auto Show, the C5 Aircross Concept immediately grabs attention with its boxy, almost imposing silhouette. Citroen describes it as a "dense, muscular, and organic block," and it's certainly a departure from the softer lines of the current model. Surprisingly, the aerodynamics played a key role in the boxy design. Subtle curves and those unusual fin-like taillights help this SUV slip through the air with greater efficiency, according to Citroen.

The concept car stretches 183.07 inches in length, a significant 5.9 inches longer than the outgoing C5 Aircross. This means more space for passengers and cargo, solidifying its role as a family-friendly SUV. While Citroen hasn't revealed the interior yet, they promise a spacious and comfortable cabin for five, referring to it as a "wellness area" and a "cocoon on wheels." Expect a focus on high-quality materials and the latest technology, including advanced driver-assistance systems and a cutting-edge infotainment system.

Underpinning the 2025 C5 Aircross is the new STLA Medium platform, a versatile architecture that can accommodate a range of powertrains, including gasoline, hybrid, and fully electric options. This aligns with Citroen's push towards electrification, offering something for everyone.

While specific details remain under wraps, it's likely that the entry-level model will feature the trusty mild-hybrid setup with 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine producing 134 hp (100 kW). This engine is already found in various Stellantis models, offering a balance of performance and fuel efficiency.

Unsurprisingly, the fully electric e-C5 Aircross is generating a lot of interest. It's expected to offer a choice of 73 kWh or 98 kWh battery packs, with a potential range of up to 435 miles. If the mechanically related Peugeot e-3008 and e-5008 are any indication, the e-C5 Aircross should be available with both single-motor (front-wheel drive) and dual-motor (all-wheel drive) configurations.

With the Citroen C5 X sedan expected to be discontinued, the new C5 Aircross will step up as the brand's flagship model. The production version of the C5 Aircross is slated to debut in 2025. As we get closer to the launch date, Citroen will likely reveal more details about the powertrain options, interior design, and available technology.
