CATL’s new battery will last 1.5 million kilometers, 15 years

Electric vehicles may be the future of transportation, but battery longevity needs to improve significantly before they can claim to be outright more durable than ICEs. After all that the hardest and most expensive part to replace so people need to know they won't need to do it for a long while. Chinese battery giant CATL and bus heavyweight Yutong Bus Co have just made a giant step forward that could significantly boost the electrification of the heavy-duty segment.

The two companies just launched a new battery specifically aimed at commercial vehicles like buses and trucks. It boasts an unprecedented warranty of up to 15 years or an eye-popping 932,000 miles, whichever comes first. Equally impressive, this battery sustains zero degradation within the first 1,000 charging cycles and comes with an industry-leading warranty. And those are the numbers the company guarantees on every unit - odds are the majority of them will exceed that significantly.

We also saw a less extreme yet still highly durable battery with a 10-year or 621,000 miles guarantee. This is a significant leap forward in the electric truck and bus longevity, potentially slashing long-term ownership costs.

CATL and Yutong have been partners since 2012, and they plan further worldwide expansion with their innovative new batteries on board Yutong's diverse lineup of commercial vehicles.

Companies like CATL and BYD are rapidly finding their batteries at the core of EVs by global automotive titans. Tesla, Ford, and BMW are turning to Chinese battery suppliers to power their electric vehicles.

CATL also has several other projects pushing battery technology forward. Last year, they unveiled a superfast-charging battery capable of adding 248 miles range in just 10 minutes. To combat the high cost of some battery types, CATL announced a plan to slash the cost of LFP battery cells in half this year. As battery technology rapidly improves, longevity and cost quickly fall by the wayside.
