General Motors' joint venture SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) has teased its latest contender, the Wuling Starlight S electric SUV. With a starting price of roughly $9,700 (RMB 69,800), the Starlight S aims to undercut rivals like the BYD Song Plus and Tesla Model Y by a wide margin, appealing to consumers seeking an affordable EV.

GM's Wuling challenges BYD and Tesla with budget-friendly Starlight S electric SUV

The Starlight S is the second model under Wuling's Silver Label, following the Starlight electric sedan launched earlier this year. While both vehicles share the same name, the Starlight S is a distinct model, boasting dimensions of 186.8 inches in length, 74.4 inches in width, and 66.1 inches in height, with a wheelbase of 110.2 inches.

SGMW has unveiled teaser images of the Starlight S, showcasing a modern design with split headlights and distinctive "7"-shaped taillights. The EV and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variants will sport different front designs and chrome trims, allowing buyers to differentiate between the two powertrain options.

Speaking of powertrains, the Starlight S PHEV will be equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine generating 106 hp (78 kW) and a choice of two battery packs: a 20.5 kWh unit offering 56 miles of pure electric range and a smaller 9.5 kWh battery providing 27 miles of electric-only driving. The BEV variant, on the other hand, will feature a 201 hp (150 kW) electric motor and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, with official range figures yet to be revealed.

Inside, the Starlight S promises features like a sunroof, roof rack, front radar, and essential safety systems such as anti-lock brakes and electronic brake-force distribution. We gather the Starlight S will offer a basic experience without much fancy stuff - similar to the one offered by Dacia Spring. Only in a much bigger and cheaper package.

The Wuling Starlight S is expected to hit the Chinese market soon, offering an affordable and practical alternative to more established EV models. With its competitive pricing, versatile design, and two powertrain options, the Starlight S could prove to be a disruptor in the rapidly evolving Chinese EV landscape.
