Lucid Motors adopts NACS standard from 2025

Max McDee, 07 November 2023

The EV charging landscape is undergoing a significant shift and luxury EV maker Lucid Motors is the latest to announce its plan to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS). The move will providing Lucid owners access to Tesla's extensive network of Superchargers. By 2025, Lucid EVs, known for their sleek design and long range, will be able to plug into the over 15,000 Superchargers dotting the continent.

The shift to NACS from the current Combined Charging System (CCS1) used by Lucid marks a strategic move to unify charging solutions, a step that echoes the sentiments of EV enthusiasts who have long advocated for a more streamlined infrastructure.

The decision by Lucid comes amidst a wave of industry support for the Tesla-originated NACS. Major players like Ford and General Motors have already thrown their hats in the ring, with the latter's backing signifying a tipping point for the charging standard. This growing consensus among automakers suggests that NACS is fast becoming the ubiquitous choice for EV charging in North America.

Lucid's CEO and CTO, Peter Rawlinson, emphasizes the strategic importance of this transition. By aligning with a charging standard supported by a nationwide network of high-voltage charging stations, Lucid is not just enhancing the charging experience for its customers but also wants to be seen as a catalyst in the movement toward sustainable transportation.

As of now, Lucid's electric lineup, which includes the Air model and the soon-to-be-revealed Gravity SUV, requires an adapter to tap into the Tesla Supercharger network. However, come 2025, new Lucid vehicles will be NACS-ready, eliminating the need for such accessory.

Interestingly, while Lucid's adoption of NACS is a forward-looking move, it's not an immediate transformation. The company's current and next-gen models, including the much-anticipated Gravity SUV, will still require an adapter until the 2025 shift.

Lucid's embrace of NACS could be seen as another step towards a charging utopia where the plug is mightier than the pump. While some might argue that the timeline seems a tad relaxed given the pace of EV development, others may appreciate the deliberate approach in ensuring compatibility and convenience for Lucid customers.
