23 April 2022
The overwhelming majority of electric cars nowadays don’t use a gearbox.

That's a good read.. but the high rpm of e-motors overcoming inertia can be an energy drain.. if e-motors have such a great torque, we should utilise them more in mega ships and cranes with gear boxes and sweet hydraulics.. anyways the whole idea od a heavy car (which is actually really heavy) is a failure.. man needs to be able to move from A to B without wasting so much energy.

The shortest way to explain this is,

1. Gasoline engines normally give very less torque at low rpm, and higher torque at higher rpm (upto a limit). But sufficient torque is always needed, to even move an inch.

2. Lower gears ensure that at low speeds = high engine rpm, so that good torque pulls the vehicle well.

3. EV's have high torque at all rpm's (upto a higher limit where it start reducing) so gearbox not needed.

See how electric train engines work in India, it is lugging a load of above 800 tonnes, and travelling at 2 kmph... No revving needed. Yes, 2 kmph, but it can go upto 140 kmph as well.
Electric they are, amazing they are.

A well thought post but their is few technical mistakes. Like you said ev does have conventional gearbox, but they don't have even unconventional gear box as well.
Ev's gearbox isn't a gear in the first place. Ev doesn't have any gear shift lever so no gearbox. It's called single speed or two speed transmission system that gets instruction from the drive box. Gearbox referred the whole power delivery system to drive shaft Like ev don't use conventional gearbox transmission system this why they use VCU200 (for tesla) instead of a TCM which is used in traditional gearbox for ICE vehicles. It's controlled by inverted control board vcu200 just the another name of Tesla ldu.

Tesla is named one of the last reliable car for several years now in Consumer Reports survey. On the other hand Toyota has the usual reputation for their bhev.

EVs are far more reliable in general than ICE cars, but leave it to the two of the least reliable brands I've experienced to be featured in this article to add complexity with marginal benefits.

Very good article. Very concise too indeed. Now I know why those EVs don't need gearbox, me personally will miss those shifting in ICE car as a petrolhead...

how many gear needed for the liad total of 250 metric ton? or simply use computer sync electric motor in every single tire

if that so, formula e equipped with dedicated electric motor in every tire should ve able to achieve 0 to 300 mph in 1 second

I like these kind of article, it's nice to throw at friend and to have them a clear and concise explanation, even if it's not in first language :)

Congrats!

(Just a though, perhaps ArenaEV should offer the choice for the user of GSMA to be 'imported' here too, it's easier than registering again, just some sql move hehe :P)
