536 hp MG Cyberster is ready for launch
MG fans rejoice! The electric two-seater Cyberster is finally on its way and it is coming with a serious powertrain. The latest filing for the MIIT approval reveals the production-ready vehicle and it lists its main specifications. Let’s dive right in.
The 2-seat convertible is not as small as it appears in the photos. The car is 4.53 meters long - it is nearly as long as the MG 5 SR which is a 5-door wagon. It is 3 cm longer than the BMW iX1 and 24 cm longer than the Smart #1. Its 2.69-meter wheelbase is equal to that of the BMW iX1 - not a tiny Mazda MX5 competitor then. In fact, the Cyberster is 62 cm longer than the MX5 - that’s 24.4 inches.
There are two single-motor versions. Both have a permanent magnet electric motor powering the rear wheels. The weaker version comes with 231 kW (309 hp) and the more gutsy option has 250 kW (335 hp). Both cars reach a top speed of 193 km/h and should be plenty of fun to drive.
If however, the 335 hp pushing the rear end of the car sideways is not enough, MG has another version for you. This one comes with two electric motors powering all 4 wheels. The combined output is a whopping 400 kW or 536 hp. The top speed is 200 km/h and for now, that’s all we have - the company is keeping the performance figures close to its chest.
While the regulatory filing did not reveal the interior of MG Cyberster, we trawled the endless Chinese social media and found a few spy shots. Unfortunately, the Cyberster will come with a yoke steering and we can only hope the car has an adaptive steering ratio like the Lexus RZ 450e. If not, it’ll be a disaster similar to Tesla’s fixed ratio steering yoke.
The dual-motor MG Cyberster weighs 1,985 kgThe center console is turned towards the driver and three digital screens are angled as well. It should be really fun to drive this one. According to some spy photos, the MG will feature scissor doors which would make this electric speedster an absolute must for anyone who cares about arriving in style. Or smashing light bulbs in the garage.
With the MIIT approval official, the MG Cyberster is guaranteed to be launched soon. The best event for that would be the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show which is only days away. MG is all about value and we really hope this will apply to the Cyberster, it would be a dream come true for many buyers - as long as the car remains affordable.
