SAP gives up on Tesla company cars

Vlad, 06 February 2024

Hertz is doing away with 20,000 EVs in the US and pausing any further purchases from Polestar, and now another huge fleet owner is turning away from some EVs. We're talking about German software giant SAP, which decided not to purchase anymore Tesla EVs for its fleet starting next year.

So far SAP has bought thousands of Teslas, but it doesn't want any more. The reason is how much Tesla's EV pricing fluctuates, which makes planning acquisitions more difficult and more risky, according to SAP's head of fleet Steffen Krautwasser.

SAP gives up on Tesla company cars

Tesla's myriad price reductions for new vehicles in 2023 and even this year are reducing the resale value of used cars, thus becoming a problem for large customers like SAP which have a lot to sell once they're done with them.

Furthermore, according to Krautwasser, Tesla often delivering cars early is another issue, causing logistical and storage headaches for SAP given the large quantities we're talking about. SAP has about 29,000 vehicles in its fleet, including 3,100 EVs and from next year will purchase only zero emission vehicles, but none of them will be Teslas.
