XPeng starts nationwide rollout of its autonomous driving software

In a move that is seen as a watershed moment for autonomous driving in China, electric vehicle manufacturer XPeng has initiated a nationwide rollout of its advanced driver-assistance system XNGP. Following extensive beta testing and over 7.56 million kilometers of real-world trials, XNGP is now accessible to all eligible XPeng vehicles across China.

XNGP, similar to Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD), has evolved from its initial highway-only availability (Highway NGP) to encompass urban areas (City NGP). Now, it collectively refers to XPeng's comprehensive suite of ADAS functionalities. XPeng CEO He Xiaopeng emphasized XNGP's use of end-to-end AI technology, a new approach employed by only two car manufacturers globally.

While XNGP has technically been available on all Chinese roads since early 2024, XPeng's meticulous testing phase indicates the company's commitment to ensuring the technology's safety and reliability. This rather cautious approach contrasts with Tesla's more aggressive rollout strategy for FSD.

The latest XNGP iteration already boasts the impressive capability of autonomously navigating toll booths, and XPeng envisions expanding its functionalities to include parking lot gates and internal campus roads by the fourth quarter. This "door-to-door" experience will change the way drivers interact with their vehicles and promises to seamlessly integrate automated driving into everyday commutes.

Looking further ahead, XPeng projects a significant reduction in the frequency of safety takeovers and efficiency takeovers by the turn of 2026. The new enhanced user experience is made possible by the rapid pace of XPeng's over-the-air (OTA) updates. Thanks to the end-to-end technology, XPeng can push new version iterations every two days and provide experience upgrades every two weeks.

XPeng's commitment to innovation goes beyond XNGP to its broader Tianji operating system, which encompasses both the ADAS and smart cockpit systems. The latest Tianji XOS 5.2.0 update comes with 484 feature upgrades, including seamless phone integration. The rollout of Tianji XOS 5.2.0 for XPeng's Max version models in China is already underway, with overseas users slated to receive the update in mid-August.
