2027 BMW 7-Series gets a high-tech makeover

BMW is changing the way it builds its most expensive sedan. The 2027 BMW 7-Series is a preview of how all future BMW electric cars will work. Even though this car still uses some older parts, it now carries the brains of the "Neue Klasse" models. The car is smarter, lighter, and packed with screens that might make your living room look old.

The outside of the new 7-Series has a familiar look. The famous front grille is now wider and not as tall as before - it even glows. The main headlights are tucked away in the bumper, while the thin daytime lights sit higher up. BMW is using more body-colored plastic on the front this time. The two-tone paint job we see in the photos takes 75 hours to finish, but it might not be for everyone. At the back, the taillights are longer, and the car features a new matte logo.

Inside the cabin, things get more interesting. BMW added a "Panoramic Vision" system. This projects information across the entire bottom of the windshield. There is a large 17.9-inch screen in the middle. For the first time, the front passenger gets their own 14.6-inch screen. They can play games or watch movies. However, a camera watches the driver. If the driver looks at the passenger's screen, the display dims so they don't get distracted.

Passengers in the back seat still get the 31.3-inch Theater Screen. This 8K display now works like a tablet thanks to new touch controls. It also has a camera for Zoom calls and an HDMI port to plug in a laptop. If you pay extra, you get a 36-speaker Bowers and Wilkins sound system with 1,925 W of power. Even the standard car comes with 18 speakers and 575 watts.

The electric versions get a major power boost. BMW is using new cylindrical battery cells that hold 20 percent more energy than the old ones. The usable battery size is now 112.5 kWh and all i7 models now use the NACS charging port - the same one Tesla uses. They can also charge faster at 250 kW. This means you can go from 10 percent to 80 percent battery in about 28 minutes.

The i7 60 xDrive is a very fast electric car. It has 536 hp (400 kW) and can drive more than 350 miles on a single charge. It sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. This model costs $126,250. If you want something slightly cheaper, there is the i7 50 xDrive with 449 hp (335 kW) at $107,750. It reaches 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. For people who still want gasoline engines, the 740 models use a six-cylinder engine with 394 hp (294 kW). Prices for those start at $101,350.

The most powerful version is the i7 M70 xDrive - it has 680 horsepower on tap and it can rocket to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds despite its rather large size. This model is rated for 426 miles and can charge at maximum of 250 kW.

The car is also a little bit lighter thanks to BMW using a new "zonal" wiring system. This removed about 2,001 ft of heavy cables. This change alone makes the wiring 30 percent lighter. The car also has a new voice assistant - Amazon's Alexa. You can talk to the car like a normal person to change the temperature or control your smart home.

BMW also updated the safety tech, calling it "Symbiotic Drive." This system watches your eyes, and it only helps you stay in your lane if it thinks you are drifting by mistake. It can even spot animals on the road and stop the car. Interestingly, BMW stopped trying to make the car drive itself completely and removed the "Level 3" autonomous features. The company decided that having a human driver stay alert is safer and less of a legal headache for now.

Production for the new 7-Series starts in July 2026 in Germany. The electric i7 and gas-powered 740 models will arrive in Europe first and in the United States shortly after. A plug-in hybrid version, the 750e xDrive, will show up in early 2027 with 483 hp (360 kW) and will be joined by a more powerful V8 model.
