2023 Tata Nexon EV gets a major refresh

The electric vehicle market never rests, and Tata Motors is ensuring it keeps pace. The Indian automaker has lifted the curtains off its updated 2023 Nexon EV facelift. It’s not entirely a metamorphosis but definitely more than just a nip and tuck.

The new, clearly Curvv-inspired approach brings the Nexon EV more in line with its petrol and diesel siblings. Seems like Tata wanted the whole family to look alike. Thankfully the techno-wizards at Tata haven't just rested with a cosmetic makeover. The Nexon EV comes packed with quite a list of upgrades.

First of all - no more Prime and Max! Tata decided that the Nexon EV deserved variant names that get straight to the point. Enter the "Long Range" and "Mid Range." The Long Range version promises an impressive 289 miles (up from the earlier 288 miles) thanks to the 40.5 kWh battery pack. The Mid Range has a smaller 30 kWh battery and delivers 202 miles, a token boost from its previous 199 miles. That's just a fancy way of saying they squeezed out an extra mile or two.

Tata's Nexon EV now boasts a Gen2 motor, letting it rev up to a whopping 16,000 rpm from the earlier 12,000 rpm. The power? A commendable 142.6 horsepower - yes, point six exactly - with a torque of 159 lb-ft. Surprisingly, this electric steed can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 8.9 seconds, finally topping out at 93 mph. That's up from the earlier modest 74 mph.

Tata apparently has taken another look at the NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) levels, making it an even smoother ride. Plus, there is improved regen braking control via paddle shifters with an added efficiency improvement between 10-15 percent. Finally, to eke those extra miles out of the battery, Tata fitted the lowest rolling resistance tires in its class to the new Nexon.

When it comes to topping up the battery, you can get a 10% to 80% charge in just 56 minutes with a fast DC charger. The Nexon EV now features V2L (Vehicle to Load) and V2V (Vehicle to Vehicle) charging capabilities with a 5 kVA output, comparable to what we've seen in models like the Hyundai Ioniq 5.

Safety and convenience seem to be the new message from Tata, with automatic climate control, Xpress cooling, and an auto defogger. Airbags? Six of them. There's also a comprehensive 360-degree camera system, seatbelt reminders, and front parking assistance. The battery pack comes with IP67 protection, and the car boasts a range of other safety features, from hill descent control to emergency brake alert.

The 2023 Nexon EV comes with a larger 10.25-inch display, a considerable increase from the older 7-inch unit. And for audiophiles, a 320-watt JBL cinematic sound system with five speakers should be music to your ears.
