VW's new APP550 motor efficiency revealed in Skoda Enyaq real life range test

Ro, 07 March 2024

The guys at Battery Life did a real life efficiency test on the new Skoda Enyaq 85, which is equipped with the new 210 kW APP550 electric motor from Volkswagen and put it against the older Skoda Enyaq IV 80, running on the far less potent 150 kW motor.

The rules are pretty simple - both cars drive at 81 mph speed for 75 miles with all the climate control settings matched - 70°F at auto. There's one minor detail that may have affected the test results slightly. The newer Enyaq 85 has 20-inch tires in the test, while the older model spins on 19-inchers. Both vehicles started at 80% battery charge.

The end results are rather impressive. The new Enyaq 85 recorded 2.9 mi/kWh consumption with 46% battery left, while the older Enyaq had a 2.8 mi/kWh consumption, ending the test at 43% charge.

Consumption includes AC, battery management as well as lights and infotainment so it's hard to put an exact percentage to the efficiency improvement brought by the new motor. Still bringing the overall consumption down significantly, while boosting power output by 40% is a major success no matter how you look at it.
