BYD's NEV pickup leaks ahead of global launch

Chinese automaker BYD is about to join the pickup truck market, a new leak reveals.

BYD is gearing up for global electric pickup launch

Leaked images suggest that BYD's first electric pickup truck could launch globally before the end of 2024. The model appears to rival the popular Toyota Hilux in size, positioned within the midsize to full-size pickup segment.

This would be a pivotal moment for BYD if the rumors prove true. While the company thrives in the Chinese EV market and continues expanding its reach worldwide, it has yet to venture into the electric pickup space. BYD's electric pickup truck faces fierce competition from established models and numerous upcoming models from American automakers like Ford, GMC, Rivian, and even Tesla.

This isn't surprising — the EV market is dynamic and highly competitive. In late 2023, BYD briefly held the global EV sales crown, surpassing Tesla. In 2024, BYD remained a dominant EV player, even as Tesla reclaimed its top position following solid (even if less than expected) sales numbers.

The electric pickup would complete BYD's electric vehicle lineup, addressing a highly popular vehicle segment. Trucks often reign supreme as top sellers in international markets, making this a strategic move for the automaker. In some countries, like China, light trucks have certain restrictions that are not faced by passenger vehicles. BYD's decision to target global markets for its electric pickup truck is very telling, especially where it sees the most potential for this model.

While a BYD spokesperson confirmed the existence of an upcoming electric pickup truck, specific details are still scarce. Expect BYD to unveil its mystery pickup in the coming months, revealing crucial specs like range, towing capacity, payload, and, most importantly – price.
