Scout Motors to unveil its first electric off-roaders this summer

Max McDee, 03 January 2024

Scout Motors, Volkswagen's upcoming American off-road EV brand, teased its first electric SUVs. Unfortunately, we will have to wait a while for the real deal since the actual unveiling is scheduled for this summer. The wait gets even longer with the production slated for 2026. The brand decided that customers could not wait any longer and offered a sneak peek into its plans through an 82-second teaser video, titled "There is a Scout in All of Us."

Scout Motors claims that scouts "shun comfortable, ignore uncertainty, laugh at difficult". However, the real intrigue lies in the closing frames of the video, teasing the official announcement in summer 2024.

The automaker has so far only unveiled sketches of two anticipated EVs – a robust off-roader and a pickup, poised to rival the Rivian R1T and R1S. Assisting in the development is Magna, renowned for crafting the Mercedes G-Class, hinting at Scout's serious off-road aspirations.

Unlike other legacy rivals already on the market, Scout emphasizes an all-electric lineup, underpinned by a bespoke platform tailored explicitly for rugged SUV needs, diverging from the MEB platform. Despite the futuristic powertrains, Scout Motors seeks inspiration from the past, contemplating the revival of legendary names such as Scout 80, Scout 800, Scout II, Terra, Traveler, and Super Scout, harking back to the '60s to '80s era of the International Harvester Scout.

Scout Motors teases summer unveiling of its electric off-roaders

Scout Motors is constructing a new manufacturing plant in South Carolina, scheduled to be operational in 2026. This dedicated facility is a sign of commitment from VW to crafting electric vehicles that not only challenge the status quo but also pay homage to the rich legacy of off-road adventures. At least we’d hope it is.
