Sporty Kia EV5 GT Line debuts in China

Max McDee, 26 November 2024

Kia unveiled its latest electric vehicle, the 2025 EV5 GT Line, at the 2024 Guangzhou Auto Show. This sporty SUV comes with an affordable price tag, starting at under $30,000 in China. It seems Kia is aiming squarely for the Tesla Model Y's crown with this release.

The EV5 GT Line builds on the foundation of the standard EV5, which Kia introduced last summer. While the base model starts at an attractive $21,000, the GT Line adds a layer of sportiness. The exterior features a blacked-out design accentuated by 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Inside, the GT Line has a leather-wrapped, two-tone steering wheel and other blacked-out elements, giving it a premium feel.

The difference in the power department isn't that impressive, though. The GT Line version is powered by a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive system that delivers 316 hp (233 kW). That's only 10 hp more than the long-range AWD model. This allows the EV5 GT Line to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in approximately six seconds. With a CLTC range of 360 miles, the EV5 GT Line can at go decently long. Fast charging capabilities enable the battery to charge from 30% to 80% in 27 minutes.

Kia has also made significant updates to the standard EV5 models. The interior now features a new blue-gray color scheme and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. In a nod to sustainability, the 530-km range version uses all-plant leather for seats and door panels. Electric folding exterior rearview mirrors add a touch of convenience.

The EV5 measures 181.7 inches in length, 73.8 inches in width, and 67.5 inches in height. This makes it slightly smaller than the Tesla Model Y, which measures 187.4 inches long, 75.6 inches wide, and 63.9 inches tall. However, the EV5 offers a more affordable starting price than its Tesla counterpart.

Kia's next-generation ccNC infotainment system, with dual 12.3-inch center and driver display screens, is standard across the EV5 lineup. This system provides a user-friendly interface and access to a range of features, including navigation, entertainment, and vehicle settings.
